Joan as Police Woman - What Would You Do

[Poissa/Absent 142. Pigmenttimustetuloste / pigment ink print, 15x14cm.]

Olen ihan villinä riemusta leikellyt kahdeksasta hyllypaketeista taustapahveja teoksilleni.

Peukut pystyyn!

We broke the silence of the Ascension Day (which is public holiday in Finland) by assembling the another Expedit shelf and by adding some plywood and angle irons to both before moving them to their final places. Again it was a perfect day for this kind of work: it's cold outside, and so grey and dark, that we've had lights on the whole day. The rain patters comfortable to the window glass (well, it's nice to be inside and warm). Assembling the shelves didn't take much time, but other things - adding the plywood and additional screws and angle irons - took so much hours that the project will continue still maybe a day or two. Hopefully we'll get to bolt the whole thing to a wall next weekend.

With wild joy I've been cutting all the cardboard of the eight shelf packages to my own package use. I'll have a proper stock of packaging material, which is normally almost always finished (because I don't want to use all my finances on buying expensive packaging materials - and also I prefer using this kind of recycled material). While the another room slowly starts to be organized heaven, my work room has turned into a cardboard and plastic wrap storage with piles of stuff lying around. I'm cutting all this material suitable for my purposes and try to make the piles smaller. Maybe I'll see my workroom floor again soon...

Today I've also written and sent an offer of quite large illustration work. It's not certain, that the project will be handed to me, but I've already have filled the paper corners with sketches. The theme of the illustration project is very important and very close to myself, and after reading a brief, my pen just started to move by itself... I hope I can tell more about this project later. Keep your fingers crossed!

James - Frozen Britain

[Poissa/Absent 48. Pigmenttimustetuloste / pigment ink print, 15x14cm.]

Nimikoituna. Jospa sitten loppuisi myös jokaviikkoinen laturien etsimisruljanssi.

Tämä uusi järjestys kesän kynnyksellä tuntuu uudelta alulta. Inspiroivaa.

Big Little joys of life: last August we purchased two Ikea 5x5 Expedit shelves to divide one room in two spaces; in order to have more shelves for our books and lps, but also to have a small extra working space for me. Our lives have been so busy, that we haven't had a whole day to do this before, but yesterday we finally got some time to start the project. We spent the whole day working: assembling the shelf itself was a fast job, but before that we did some cleaning and threw away some stuff. We only assembled the first shelf, because we like to buy some backboards and some additional stuff to strenghten the shelves (because... Ikea). We will continue with the project at the end of the week, when all backboards and angle irons will be purchased.

But I'm feeling so glad already: soon the art books will find their new home on shelves instead of having to spend their life on piles on the floor. And then I'll have a spot, where I will sign my works and pack them to for shipping - until now I have managed to do all this by our kitchen table. It doesn't matter really, but even the smallest chores are strangely laborious when you have to clear the space every time and then search for the stuff you need all around the flat - and clean up everything straigthaway, when it is time to cook.

As a bonus round for this sudden need to organize everything, I ended up planning a chargery next to the doorway of the small extra space: I will design a small stand, which has space for all the chargers of this household, from battery chargers of the cameras to chargers of cellphones, laptops and tablets. With their labels on each cord. Maybe then the weekly searches for some charger would finally stop.

This new order and the summer coming soon feels  all as a new start. Inspiring!

The National - I Need My Girl

[Poissa/Absent 194. Pigmenttimustetuloste / pigment ink print, 15x14cm.]

[Below in English]

ps. Ennenkuin menette pois netistä: Hietzu on kirjoittanut blogiinsa Jyväskylän taiteilijaseuran Kevättuuletuksesta: Taidetta puoleen hintaan

I'm starting to reach the outer limits of my work amount: the illustration and layout jobs that I normally like, don't proceed anywhere. More new stuff just piles around. I've been waiting anxiously the end of May, thinking, that now I could finally concentrate into my own projects. I just couldn't prepare myself with this situation, when everything is just stuck or even taken a few steps back without me able to influence to it. And certainly I wasn't prepared to the sudden hot weather, which makes even the smallest job feel huge - and no need to say, that with the sun shining outside, I'm not really enjoying sitting inside staring my computer screen.

I was happy to have a couple of days off last weekend and at the start of the week: on Sunday we took train to Helsinki and came back on late Tuesday evening. We stayed in the upscale hotel Torni (which just happened to cost only a few euros more than the cheap self-service hotel chain Omena next to Torni) and the room was so spacious and cozy, that it was almost hard to leave it to go outside, even though the weather was beautiful. However, I was somewhat tired and a little bit unwell during the whole trip, and I almost flipped on Monday, when I got a few email messages marked "urgent", requiring my comment or approval on a thing or another - they all were about cases that could have been taken care of at a much earlier stage. First I thought that I wouldn't react to those messages just because I had my last day off so long ago that I really would have needed those two days without any extra mess.

But I'm glad that technique failed and made the decision for me: I just forgot my tablet charger home and when the tablet battery went out, I went offline with it. At the same time I also lost the possibility to read the electronic magazines that I had downloaded for the return trip home - the reason why my tablet was turned on. Maybe in the future I'll be wise enough to leave my tablet home and just buy good old paper mags or just crab some paper back books to my bag.

How can it be so difficult to plug myself offline even just for couple of days? And why do I feel so bad  and even anxiety, when I don't answer my messages on my days off (and when everyone knows I'm having a day off)? I have been explaining my need to read email with the fact, that if I don't react to emails at once, they start to pile and then it is just pure pain to try to deal with them later when there are too much messages. But I'm starting to suspect, that I might be online addict. If I just had kept all the "door closed" on my trip, I would have had a couple of Real Holidays, instead of thinking unconsciously about the problems I didn't reply to. John Lennon has said "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." I say (and probably somebody else has said this before, this seems to be so obvious: "Life is what happens around you while you're online." (Well, Google didn't return any quotes on that one...) Or: "Life is what happens around you while you're checking your email."

(And I was fool to have compunction and stress about not reacting: all cases proceed perfectly fine without me.)

Kevätmielellä / Spring Spirit

[Poissa / Absent 143. Pigmenttimustetuloste / pigment ink print, 15x14cm.]

Tänään sama kaunis ilma odottaa ikkunan takana. Olen pakannut luonnoslehtiön jo laukkuuni...

In Berlin we got some pre-taste of the green scenery and warmth - and slowly the summer starts to reach these northern corners too. During the last week the trees got some leaves and yesterday it was the first real summer day. It was a perfect day to start the spring sales at the gallery Becker (of the Jyväskylä Artists' Society) in Jyväskylä. Even though I was one of the voluntary workers selling art works, there was nothing that felt "work". It was great to see how artworks found their ways to new homes, and it was especially wonderful to meet people, who had bought my artworks earlier or purchased it yesterday. Usually the gallery sales are so faceless, the purchaser of the artwork and the artist meet only seldom - and that's why when these exceptions happen, you always feel double energized for the following days.

(There were the prints of my Absent installation and also a few of the older works on sale at the event. Some artworks were sold yesterday and the rest of them will be available for half a price from the gallery "back room" until the end of May.)

Yesterday there was also "Yläkaupungin yö" event ("the night at the upper city"), which is sort of a city carneval with lots of free cultural events. But I had a difficult commission web site project waiting on my workdesk, so I missed the night parties and sat next to my computer from 5pm on. On the other hand, I peeked the event programme and noticed that there weren't a lot of offering to my mindset right now - nothing that I would have wanted to go and see no matter what. The sunny weather, though, was making my work inside almost impossible. I'm so proud of myself, that I did obey myself: at least one big problem half-solved and the project took a giant step ahead. Less work-pain for next week.

Today the similar beautiful weather is waiting outside the window. I have already packed the sketch book into my bag...

Poissa on poissa / Absent is absent

[Poissa 195. Pigmenttimustetuloste, 15x14cm.]

Due to the residence time I spent in Berlin, I only just got to unpack the 200-piece Absent installation. The installation was exhibited for the last time in Prague this spring. In a way I'm relieved about the fact, that there won't be the twelve hour installation session waiting never ever again with this work, but at the same time I feel a bit sad, that I won't be able to see and experience the work again. The Absent installation has been one of my favourite works and it's hard to do anything like that again. I also noticed that in my documentary photos the three-dimension installation won't show its true colours like it was when experienced live. Even in the best photos there is only a slight glimpse of what the big three-dimension work was on site. I didn't take any proper videos of the installation, but some small video clips I should have - so maybe I could edit some kind of documentation afterwards.

From May 17 on, the prints that were part of the installation are for 50% sale, à 35€.** Preorders / reservations available until May 17, until 10pm UTC+2 (preorders will be shipped via mail, or reserved print(s) can be collected from gallery Becker May 17 through May 30, 2014)! ** Please read more: http://www.paivihintsanen.fi/poissa-installaation-vedokset-myynnissa-prints-from-absent-installation-on-sale

Random Prints (vol. 4)

The Fragrance of Skies.

Olen tehnyt vedokset laatupaperille. Aiemmissa kolmessa projektissani olen käyttänyt 305 grammaista Hahnemühlen Ultra Smooth Photo Rag -paperia, tällä kertaa käytin 188-grammaista, koska maahantuojalla ei ollut varastossa paksumpaa. Tällä kertaa projektiin kulunut paperi maksoi 85 euroa, aiemmin se on maksanut noin 110 euroa. Pigmenttimustetta kului noin kahdenkymmenen viiden euron edestä.

Today I left around the last four envelopes of Random Prints project (vol. 4) - all 90 envelopes have now been left around Berlin.

One of my artist collagues posted to Random Prints FB-page a comment, in which he requested, if there was any sense in my project at all, and if it is ok for an artist to give her artworks away for free, "without gaining anything". Partly I understand his comments, but still really I don't. (Edit: Maybe the commentator doesn't stand by his comment anyway, because he has deleted his comment right before I ended up publishing this posting and make a link to his original comment. But I'm publishing this entry anyway.)

Yes, I admit, I spend both time and money in my project. I have printed the pictures on high-quality paper. In my three earlier Random Prints projects I've used 305 gr Hahnemühle Ultra Smooth Photo Rag paper, this time I used 188 gr paper, because there wasn't thicker paper at the importer's shelves. This time the cost of the paper used in this project was 85 euros, before it has been about 110 euros. I've used pigment ink for about 25 euros worth. Of the envelopes, slightly thicker than normal ones, I've paid a couple of tens of euros and of the paper in letters for a few euros. It has taken about one week to make the picture and print it, and to cut the papers, sign the prints and assembling the letters and prints to envetlopes has taken a few days (each envelope has besides the print itself, also an accompanying letter with greetings in English, German and French.)

So, I use both time and money, but "without gaining anything"? When the income is low, money will come easily the most important - maybe even only important - compensation, but I've never thought I would make any project just for money - some projects just has to be done, regardless if they bring or take money. I won't get a penny from this Random Prints project (neither), but it has never been the purpose in any way.

I can't say why I started the Random Prints project and where I got the idea in the first place (I've called the project my therapy project - something I'm doing because I just have to), and I can't even tell, what I was originally expecting from the project. But what I have gotten from the project is anyway much more important than money. Beforehand I couldn't even thought how much joy the simple prints could bring to people, and I couldn't predict how the project would play a large role in some important memories. One couple told me, that the print is framed and is hanging on their dining room wall, and in a few years time a new christmas tradition has born: each year during the christmas dinner they tell to their grand children a story about how they found the letter in some sunny day during their trip to Florence. One woman found the envelope in the same day she heard that her serious illness had been defeated. One woman found the envelope in the mids of everyday life, and it just changed the whole day. This kind of stories are much more bigger than the picture alone would have been, and they make the whole project bigger than it was never meant to be. In some strange way, each and every time, the story of the envelopes is intertwined in lives of ninety people, forming a new chapter on the story of people who have found the envelopes.

However, during the last few years, the most important thing that the Random Prints project has brought to myself, is some kind of feeling of hope - 'hope' is maybe closest word to the feeling which is hard to describe. Every time when I'm leaving Random Prints envelopes around I feel almost quilty, almost as if I was doing something evil and criminal. Maybe the feeling rises from the fact, that I have executed every Random Prints project when I'm travelling abroad, and every time the trip has started from airport, in which you can't leave anything anywhere - it's the same if it is an envelope or a suitcase. I have followed the rule diligently - I wouldn't like to cause any false terrorist alarm. But the unsecure feeling follows you from airports to the cities, to the towns and villages, to the countryside. Everytime I leave an envelope to a public space, I have a same kind of alarmed feeling, and once and a while I wonder the possibility of alert it could make and I imagine people being scared of that unknown object. Things that wouldn't even visited one's mind a few decades ago. In some way it feels so comforting to know, that there still are some people, who dare to open perfectly anonymous envelopes in these world full of threats.

There is still something else, that I've gained through this project. Some of the finders of Random Prints envelopes have stayed my email correspondents, penpals. With many of those I haven't written about this project in a long long time, or about art in generally either. We write to each others of our ordinary lives, of the weather in general, of what we've enjoyed as lunch or of what movies we've seen. It is somehow breathtakingly valuable to get a piece of someone's every day life from hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away. We have been joined together just by that small envelope, coincidentanlly found.
