Tule tapaamaan / Come to meet me

Tiistaina 3.5. olen paikalla lainaamossa (Galleria Becker, Seminaarinkatu 28, Jyväskylä) ripustelemassa teoksiani gallerian aukioloaikana klo 12-17 – tervetuloa tapaamaan + juomaan kaffet kanssani!

Lately I have been quite low, my inner optimist has hidden somewhere so deep, that it has been hard to find. April has been the cruellest month in many ways, and because of that I have decided that May won't be that. I want to push myself from my current grumpy spring mood to somewhat lighter mood, and to do that I'll be having a small sprint partyish event while working, like this:

I’m the Artist of the Month at the Jyväskylä Artists’ Society’s Artotheque in May. I’ll have a small one wall exhibition at the Artotheque, which situates at the Gallery Becker house (Seminaarinkatu 28, Jyväskylä). I’ll be at the Artotheque on Tuesday May 3rd, 12pm-5pm – welcome to visit & have coffee with me!

Tavallista elämää / Ordinary life

---

Yesterday I received my artwork shipment from Rovaniemi and I packed the Hyvinkää artworks ready to be sent later. If I had been wise enough, I had taken my brains with me, when I went to fetch the Rovaniemi shipment: I could have just sign the packages and then resend them to Hyvinkää rightaway, and I would have avoided carrying those heavy packages, and the hours of opening packages and packing another packages, and also one car trip to the shipment company. Well, they didn't have exactly the same works in them (in packages which came from Rovaniemi and in packages which I'll send to Hyvinkää), although the exhibitions carry the same name. And it wasn't that big thing to pack the Hyvinkää shipment, since I just used the almost unpacked boxes that came from Tampere the Gallery Ronga exhibition a few weeks ago; I just had to fill it with a few framed prints to substitute the sold ones (and which of course wwere in different kind of frames than the works in Rovaniemi were, so I couldn't just take ones from the Rovaniemi box). Argh. This enormours amount of bits and bobs.

Now, when it's finally the day, that I have waited so anxiously for - some time for my creative work and creating something new - I just don't have it in me right now. I just simply don't have enough energy right now. I can't push myself today, I know I can't create anything by forcing myself. So, I fill one card order which has been hanging on my to do list for ages, and then I'll take a long and warm bath, after which I will make myself some tea and I'll sat to the sofa next to the window striped by the rain, and I'll take a good book with me. And I will probably wake up a few hours late with my forehead stuck to the pages of the book.

Kolme viikkoa menee aina liian nopeasti // Three Weeks Pass Always Too Quickly

Tanssi / Dance.

It feels like yesterday, when I had the Gallery Napa vernissage in Rovaniemi and suddenly there're only two days left. The exhibition time goes by at least three times as quick as "normal" time. I think I have made a grand financial loss with the exhibition: there hasn't been many sales so far, and I won't probably even cover my travel and shipping expences with the sales, not to speak about the exhibition space rent. But I had somehow guessed it. This year the art sales have been really really quiet, at least when compared to the previous sales, so I had prepared myself to think that those works in my Rovaniemi exhibition won't sell very quickly. And in the other hand, also the travel and accommodation expences were so pricey, that I had prepared myself to that also. (And there are still two days time left: maybe there will be some last day customers, like there were at the Black Wall Gallery in Vaasa last year!)

This Jyväskylä-Rovaniemi trip (about 550 kms) made me think about the Finnish grant system that puts a lot of value to the exhibition activities outside Finland. I don't know the financial amounts of the grants but my attention is most of all at the flexibility of the systems, and in that area the system is practically screaming that it's better outside Finland. The exhibition grants to the international exhibitions (or, exhibitions outside Finland) can be applied for several times in a year when there are a lot less grants avalaible to organizing exhibitions in Finland, at least there is not such flexibility in those grant applications. (I hope I am wrong with this assumption). I'm very greatful to every grant I've received last year and this year, which have made possible for me to have exhibitions, but still I wish that somehow the exhibitions in Finland could be at least the same value as the exhibitions abroad and they could get the same attention and flexibility.

Travelling and shipping artworks in Finland is very expensive because of long distances (at least when you don't have a car). To myself the shipping it's quite easy and reasonable priced, because my small prints can be handled in almost any temperature and they fit to standardized packages, but if you have for example oil or acrylic paintings which are larger and which should be transported in temperature regulated containers, the shipping can be really really expensive - it really may be the thing that stops people to have exhibitions in further away. For the car owners this might be a bit cheaper (but not cheap), which is very ironic in this world that should prefer the public / mass transportation.

At this time I started to think about this all, when I noticed that the cost of shipping my artworks to Prague two years ago, and the flights and accommodation for two people was about the same as the costs of the shipping of my artworks and my four day trip to Rovaniemi. Though, shipping Timo Sälekivi's paintings to the same exhibition was far more expensive than my trip to Rovaniemi, but about the half of the shipping price was about the inner Finland transport (Jyväskylä-Helsinki with temperature regulated truck), about as much as the flight shipment from Helsinki to Prague. At the same year our artwork shipments and our own flights to Berlin were less expensive (for two people) than my trip and artwork shipment to Rovaniemi. (I don't count accommodation to this, because we spent three weeks in Berlin in residence). I should also mention, that we received travel grant both to Prague and Berlin exhibitions, which made possible the whole thing.

When I was travelling back from Rovaniemi to Jyväskylä I really realized the distances in Finland. I can't help but to think that what if the grant system would somehow encourage to have exhibitions in Finland as efficiently as it encourages to have exhibitions abroad, and what if the grants for exhibitions in Finland could be applied in as flexible system as they can be applied to the exhibitions abroad? Maybe the art(life) would be more coequal and equally available in the whole Finland, not just in southern cities. Maybe a bit exaggerated, but not far from the truth?

EDIT: Because I received very heavy feedback just about minutes after publishing this post, about that I try to run down the international activities and I criticize Frame Finland withtout a reason (this all came from a person that doesn't have anything to do with Frame), I would like to emphasize the fact that this post is not against Frame Finland in any way. Frame Finland makes awesome job in their area of expertice, as they support opportunities for Finnish artists to participate in international art events and exhibitions. In my post I just wish that if only we could have as efficiently working system for the exhibitions and events in Finland too.

Toimimattomuus kiusaa // Inoperativeness distressing

My head hasn't been working for over a week now, and now that I'm finally trying to get to work again, first my computer is not working and then there are some problems in my email server. I just hope that those messages have not been deleted forever but they will arrive just later. (And why, again, this happened on a very day when functioning email would just be especially important because of my future months' income.

During the last days I have done what I have managed: I have been cleaning the closets. I have tossed several bags stuff away, to trash, paper trash and to flea markets. I finally got my paper cutting machine board emptied. It was filled with stacks of my printing papers, which now have a good space in my closet shelf. I spackled the small cracks on the wall (although now they are even worse than before my fixing operation, I'm really not any handyman). I have done the laundry several times every day.

Yesterday I sat at the balcony for a few hours quietly, just admiring the simultaneous dark sky and sunshine, and watching the rain come down like small diamonds. The scent of spring is starting to be around.

Ylös alas / Up And Down

---

Up and down, in many ways. A few days ago I took a train to Rovaniemi, and up the map, to the Rovaniemi in Artic Circle I travelled with it. I was a little bit fluish but I managed to build my exhibition at the Gallery Napa. At the exhibition vernissage I met the most wonderful great people, and I thought, that it is very seldom that I feel physically so ill but still so fine mentally. Meeting new people in north was so fantastic, that I wasn't really sad even though the Rovaniemi sightseeing I had planned to have on Friday turned out to be staying in the hotel room bed and wondering if my fever is too high to go to my exhibition vernissage at all - afterwards I was so glad I chose to go, even it felt really heavy at the time. On Saturday I spent the whole day in a train; relaxed by watching movies and doing nothing in a train which left Rovaniemi at 9.25am and after one change I arrived to my home station at 7.40 in the evening. That ten hour lazy return trip in euphoristically optimistic state of mind and a little bit feverish, was actually a nice experience, total rest for the one who needed it, and I floated in some kind of euphoria until this morning.

But it was quite a rude awakening to this Sunday morning: an illness of my very close relative is gotten to the stage, that we accompanied her to the ward today. This day was all about waiting: first at home, then at the central hospital, and finally at the local health care center. Now I walk around my apartment when the sorrow crawls my skin, and I really can't think or do nothing. Although I had prepared myself to this and knew it was coming, still the Reality is much more real that it is in one's imagination beforehand.

Yet, when I opened the kitchen window to crasp some air, and I looked at the dark, where the streetlamps were still off, I smelled the scent of the melting snow for the first time. The silence around me feels comforting.
