Ovet avoinna / Open Doorways

I've been making very small 'Open Doorways' badge art pieces. This series of thirty very tiny unique prints will be shown and sold for the first time in Habitare at my booth 3b20. I wrote an introduction of this project in my website, but the whole site, including the introduction, has been now down since yesterday, because they are apparently updating the servers. (I presume this problem will be solvesd soon - and hopefully it will, because I really need my webpage right now.) Well, I can't do anything about this unlucky setback - I just hope that the information seekers could find my page later. (Basic info about this project is at the end of this posting.)

Each tiny print has an unique name, which has been written behind the picture. The titles are almost as important to me as the pictures themselves. Some of them are short one word names, some other nearly sentences. The subtitle of the series could just as well be 'Return to the Places To Escape', because with these pictures and their names I've returned to my pair of prints titled 'Places to Escape' which I made seven years ago. The two works have been mostly some kind of spiritual background milieu and a source of inspiration to these small works - but now I'm slowly starting to think about returning to the artwork pair concretely, by making more prints to this old series (actually, I originally planned the 'Places to Escape' to include more pictures.)

I seem to return to my old projects quite easily and continue them in some way. But with this 'Open Doorways' project I won't be doing that: it's an unique process. At least in the way it is now.

It's a bit of fool's game to have a project like this: it really doesn't matter, if the paper is tiny or huge: it takes just as much work to make an unique work regardless of the size - but I really can't sell these badge-sized art prints for the price of an unique work. That is one of the reasons, why this has been more one of those projects that is just nice to finally get made after years of holding them back, but at the same time it is one of those projects that are not really repeatable (at least not before I hit the main prize in lottery). One other reason is a very practical one: I have been saving these 30 blank badges for my project for years. After this project I don't have any and also the company that sold me the badges don't have them in their selection anymore.

PERUSTIEDOT

Teosten valmistumisvuosi: 2016
Editio: 1
Koko: Kuva ⌀ 5,4 cm, pinssikehyksineen ⌀ ~6 cm
Tekniikka: Museolaatuinen pigmenttimustevedos laadukkaalle 305g puuvillataidepaperille (Hahnemühle PhotoRag Ultrasmooth).

Habitareen menossa / Going to Habitare

- Ah, ihanaa aurinkoista toivoa ilmassa!

In August I'm concentrating in preparing my Habitare visit (and in writing some colour related stuff). For the very first time I'm entering the Habitare fair by myself (booth 3b20), and I'm soooo nervous about it. During this summer I have already worried, if this was alltogether a financially wrong decision in general (I should really sell a lot in Habitare to get even, but the sales haven't been very good this year, which isn't a good sign), and I've also worried about where I can get furnitures / fittings to my booth with my zero budget (I guess I'm going to go with all diy, which probably isn't very wise considering my diy handcraft and that it is a *interior design* fair). But after checking my 4m2 booth from the base plan, I'm now most nervous about, if anyone even will notice my booth!

For the last few days I've tried to make some kind of PR plan, but this stuff, that I used to do for work, feels now fuzzy and unclear in my mind - just can't get a grip of it. I would so much like to return to my creative work, but I try to control myself in a way, that I can also get all this basic stuff done as soon as possible - because why would I bring brand new works to show in my booth, if no one can find it?

Yesterday I finally got my FB event page published. I will update information there before the fair and during it. Yesterday and this morning were very couraging: I asked my followers and friends to share the page as much as they could, and that they have done! I can't see how many times the event has been shared, but what I can see from the statistic is, that it has already reached more people than I never could reach by myself. Sharing the event page won't probably correlate to the sales, but at least now there are people who know about my booth, and most of all, I'm very thankful for this Grant small gesture of sharing - it feels warming that so many people have helped me with getting the word out there!

So, I'm getting ready with a good mood, including the creative work I will soon begin. To Habitare I'm planning to realize one little idea, that has been (in some version) in my to do list since 2008 (!), but really just this year got its final form. I wish to finish a few new prints also. - This hope of getting everything fresh done is so sunny!

Japanista Kalevalaan // From Japan to Kalevala

--

Loppuviikosta on tarkoitus viedä koko kuvasarja kehystettäväksi Habitarea varten. Kuvatuksi sitä en ole edelleenkään saanut. Pitää ottaa itseään niskasta kiinni.

Yesterday we went to pack the works from the Plankko exhibition, which ended on the last day of July. I picked my 'Branches of the Tree of Tears' series prints off the wall and then brought some postcards of the series to the downstairs Emalipuu shop. How bad timing is that? The worst ever, but this time I couldn't help it.

I also sold some prints from the exhibition, and I don't have to bite my nails anymore wondering if they will sell. It's like that with new series every time: you just wait anxiously to know, if they are the kind that people will pick and take home, or if they are the kind that stays at the closet forever. I don't make my prints just the sales in mind, of course, but because I need to and those ideas filling my head make me to make these pictures, but at that point, when the pictures are finished, I wouldn't like them to be forgotten. Because of these low income times, making a new series is quite a big challenge financially. Those first prints of a new series carry always also the weight of all the test prints (the cost of papers and inks), so the first sales of the prints always help to rise back to the normal situation...

This time I was more nervous than in average about how the new works would be perceived... because somehow I just ended 'wandering around' - not very usual for me - I somehow lost the clear visual image I had had in my head for years and ended up doing something completely different.

As I started making the print series I got some inspiration from the Japanese wood block prints depicting cherry tree branches; I admired the simplicity, sensitive hues and plain layouts I wanted to replicate. When I started almost all images had a near white background with only a few very thin aquarelle-like layers of colour, hardly noticeable. But I just felt, that somehow the rough surface just wanted to be there - splashes and scratches - and finally the only direct lead to a Japanese wood block print was the proportion of the paper which I found in some old woo dblock print. But maybe there is still something else hinting about the Japanese influence too: many of the viewers have commented that when they see my 'Tears of Sorrow', it reminds them from the 'famous wave picture' (which I guess means the 'Great Wave of Kanagawa' by Katsushika Hokusai). One comment was that in my works 'the Japanese art meets Kalevala' (which is the Finnish national epic) - and that 'the Kalevala wins.' And yes - that is absolutely how the prints look!

---

I should take the series to be framed for Habitare at the end of this week. I still haven't been able to take proper photos. I should... Soon.

Elämää värin kanssa // Life With Colour

Näkymä Illustratorin työpöydältä / Screenshot of Illustrator workspace

Yesterday the Finnish Print Makers Association's Summer Prints exhibition ended in Helsinki, and today the 12th Regional Exhibition of Photography in Central Finland will end just in couple of hours. I should go and pick up my works from the Gallery Ratamo, but it's hard for me to make myself go...

During the few last days I have worked with remaking of colour wheels and systems. I thought that I could both make new illustrations available at my Coloria Society6 Shop I opened last week (the profits of any sales go straight to funding my Coloria projects) and to have some illustration material in Coloria.net website that I'm renewing at the moment, and also to practise my halfly forgotten Illustrator skills. For the latter purpose the colour systems are really good ones for tool practice, as there are many repeatable processes in even the simplest of the shapes, and I have had an heureka moment after another! And whole another trick is to redo the polygons and star shapes which are not really symmertrical even they first look like it.

Playing with these colour wheels and pyramides and what-ever-systems is the Sunday Therapy at its best.

Kortteja tulossa / New Postcards On Their Way

Maanantain to do -listalla luki, että tilaa postikortit Kyynelpuun oksat -sarjan teoksista, joten minä menin ja tilasin. Tosin olen nyt menossa kahden viikon takaisessa maanantaissa, joten millään nämä eivät Höyry-gallerian PLANKKO-näyttelyn aikaan alakerran Emalipuu-kauppaan ehdi myyntiin ennen näyttelyn loppua.

---

One of the things on my Monday's to do list was to order postcards of my Branches of the Tree of Tears print series, so I did just that. Though that was the to do list of the Monday two weeks ago, so these cards won't make it to the Emalipuu shop, downstairs of the Höyry gallery, before our PLANKKO exhibition will end at the end of July.

Random Prints Special Edition

Kesäpäivä - Summer Day

Somehow I thought that my life would slow down in July, but... After the Saturday Höyry gallery vernissage I had a meeting on Sunday about the dyeing exhibition we started to build on Monday. (But, to tell you the truth, it was more relaxing time than work, like the whole exhibition building on Monday, and those few short meetings on the weeks planning the dyeing workshop.) At all the fuss I almost forgot about this years Random Prints Special Edition 2016, which will start tomorrow, on Monday July 11, at 12 noon, when I will publish the project coordinates at randomprints.blogspot.fi/p/random-prints-2016-special-edition.html There are 30 prints of Summer Day (the whole edition) in Pori to be found. This time I'll give the coordinates where the envelopes can be found. I'm a bit excited on how this special edition will succee...

Kyynelpuun oksat // Branches of the Tree of Tears

Tänään oli Höyry-galleriassa PLANKKO-näyttelyn ripustus. Kokonaisuutena koko homma sujui hyvin.

Joten, loppu hyvin, kaikki hyvin.

Tervetuloa!

---

Today was the setup of PLANKKO exhibition. The whole process went well. The precence of half a dozen of professional artists must have felt outside the walls also, that fast the layout of the exhibition was decided (considering that there were six cooks making one soup) and the artworks were setup. The sunny weather (instead of a gray rainy weather it was promised) helped to keep the mood up.

Still I'm wondering if I could do something better myself. I think I had to compromise after compromise after compromise. Not in how or where my works were placed or in which order, but mostly about the way they are hanged. My initial idea was to hang them in the same way like I have set up my Momentum temporis series, leaving the works floating in air with magnets and long nails (only shorter in this case): my aim was to get a light fixture in a same way that I have seen in some exhibitions in botanical gardens or at the natural history museums. But this landscape print didn't hold itself straight in the same way, and I couldn't help the situation in any other way but moving to the plan B. Which was to use very very thin needles, pushing them through the paper and then to wall, leaving the print a few mils from the wall, but after an empiric research I noticed that the heavy paper would win these needles 4-0, and the paper would have probably teared. I also thought about thin nails, but then there wouldn't have been enough lightness and thinnes, so as the final possibility we put very short screws right to the wall surface and placed the works with magnets touching the wall surface. So, finally I missed the floating effect and the sort of botanical feeling I had looked for, and instead I was slightly unsure if my works were too close to each other, even though they are placed right the way I planned. If they are too fragile to this exhibition without frames?

On the other hand, when I looked at the exhibition afterwards, that even though my artworks weren't hang exactly like I had planned, they couldn't be shown in any other way.

So, the end is good, all is good.

Or beginning: from this the exhibition really starts. The vernissage is on Saturday July 2, from 12 to 4pm, I'm there with some other artists and we'll offer you some coffee and such :) Welcome!

Naisia puussa / Women in Trees

Aavistus ajasta / A Sense of Time, 2014, ed. 25

[English text below]

The Unexpected Art of Posing in Trees hämäsi.

Yesterday I had a little Midsummer Eve minivacation, after which I have now returned to work to continue finishing the works from the 'Branches of the Tree of Tears' series. Yesterday I spent the day in the lake shore, next to the sauna, barbequeing and having coffee, and just enjoying the undisturbed warmth of the perfect summer evening, and this relaxed feeling has continued to this day, even I'm now back at my work desk in the city. The sun is shining, the windows are wide open and the wind blows all my note-its from the wall, so I wouldn't know what was it that I was supposed to do next week. I don't mind. For once I'm working in total serenity. I don't know where the panic (that has bothered me for a couple of weeks) has gone, and I don't even care.

Yet I tend to wander away from my work time to time to Twitter to read some news. Originally I had in mind to read some news about Brexit, but then one headline captured my eye: The Unexpected Art of Posing in Trees. AnOtherMagazine has published a story about German artist Jochen Raiß who has collected photos of the women in trees for about twenty years, and which will be now published as a book, called exactly like my own print series 'Women in Trees' (which isn't surprising in any way, looking at what the pictures are...)

My print series is not based in any real photos: the trees are existing, the women sitting on the branches are from my imagination, but they could exist, I know. The first idea that came to my head, was not about one tree and one woman, but a very large sized print depicting a forest, where there would be one woman in one branch in each tree. The work has been half finished for over five years, because I haven't been able to make it (this is mainly a question of finances, not about technique). But because I had the theme in my head, I decided to make a series of prints with lone women in trees, sized about the same as LP cover - those lone characters fitted to this paper size I had without being too tiny. They are like details of the forest. Maybe because of the thematical round way I really didn't search any more information about this theme - if I had, maybe I had also found out about Raiß's project and also found new dimensions in my works. In my mind the women in trees was a fittingly surrealistic theme, but maybe the surrealism came specifically about the fact, that I had placed also these lone women sitting in trees to the forest full of women in trees. When I now look at the photos Raiß has collected, and then some of my own 'Women in Trees' series prints, I really can't find any surrealism in them: the women sit on their branches and in their trees as they would belong there, very naturally, and my prints would be easily fit next to Raiß's collection in a way that you couldn't really tell which one is a collection work, and which one is my art. The only difference is, that the women in my pictures never really were. (And I still see the forest full of women in trees around them, but then again, now I see them also when I look at the photos from Raiß's collection!)

Ilonkyyneleet // Tears of Joy

Ilonkyyneleet / Tears of Joy, 2016, ed. 30, 24x42cm + marg., 220€

---

Finally, a series that I have been working with over five years, starts to finish. I have planned the 'Branches of the Tree of Tears' series to include seven prints. The first of them, 'Tears of Joy' is much more delicate than I thought it would be when I was sketching it. Somehow it just found its way itself, I just simply followed where the picture took me, and listened what it said. This one is very different from the other works of the series, in which much more darker and stronger branches are crossing the paper, but it's ok. Although maybe I shouldn't promise anything: those six other works are yet to be finished. Some of them are almost there, but I tend to do big changes at the very end - they still have time to change totally before they reach the printing paper.

I just couldn't wait for the proper photographing circumstances at my studio. There's no place in home, where the lights and shadows wouldn't dance their round game. But there's still good time to take the official good quality photos later, now it's time for the shadows of the summer and light rejoice together with the tears of joy!

I thought that there wouldn't be much exhibition action this summer, but well well... I suddenly noticed that the pages are filled. I still breathe quite lightly: all these are joint, group or collective exhibitions and I have only two to six artworks in each exhibition. There will be totally new prints shown only at the Höyry gallery, and I don't really stress about making them in time. Only a slight pressure, but more the joy of getting something new created, and getting to work, in general.

Jännää // Excited

Ihan hirveän vaikeaa on kyllä pitää kuria itselleen.

---

Kas, suuri pilvi tuli peittämään auringon. Hyvä hetki palata sisään tekemään uusi työ loppuun.

---

It's just so hard to have some self-discipline. I just would like to go wandering outside into the sunlight. I have also the excuse made up: my camera battery is loaded and I really *should* take some closeups of some stones... I tried to end my urge to run away by coming to the balcony with my laptop to write this blog during my short coffee break, but this, sitting in the sun, just makes it worse. How an earth can I keep myself working inside? I really should.

For the whole week I have been desperately trying to get the shades and tones right in my new print. Now it finally starts to look promising, but I still have quite a lot to do: I'm that pedantic about colours that 'about there' isn't enough. I can feel the hurry with the project in my bones and in my mind: I should get this print to the post office tomorrow, and then it should also be signed and packed. I try not to think about it.

Also, last week I finally got to take the last prints of some series, that I haven't been able to do after the change of my inks a few years back. It was about the time: I've already received some inquiries about some of the works, and I haven't been able to answer to them. The colour adjustments and test and proof prints have taken both time and money, but there are a few series that I've managed to finish, so I've at least started the project. Four print series adjusted and printed, sixteen to go. I've promised myself, that I'll make the rest of them during this summer. And for once, I've managed to organize some time for this - maybe now, when everything is marked into my calendar, these jobs wouldn't hide from my work radar so easily.

Oh, one large cloud came and hid the sun. Good time for returning inside to continue with my new print.

Paluu päiväjärjestykseen / Back to the Routines

I have ordered water proof red envelopes for this summer's Random Prints Special Edition project. They will arrive later, so I'll just have to wait for a while to finish the packing... But I have now cut the back boards for the prints to prevent them from bending, and right now I'm placing each print in tight closed cellophane bag. I don't do either of these normally with Random Prints project prints, but this time it's a special edition, and I want to be sure that all my prints are safe when left in the Finnish outdoor air... Oh, and the name of the print (depicting a woman in red swimming suit jumping into water which is actually a gold framed coffee plate) is 'Summer Day'.

Yesterday our new fridge arrived. It was brought by a man whose expertise in this area was seen far away, and who just placed the fridge in its place, just like that, without any fuss. And he took our old fridge away with him. It was totally different experience than our last fridge replacement years ago, and which I had remembered when I had prepared myself for hours of installation nightmare. When these nightmare hours didn't arrive after all - only a half an hour wait before we could turn the fridge on - I stepped into a strange timeless void. Idle time. I could have probably done all kinds of sensible stuff in that time, but I really didn't do anything. I was just wondering how there could be such a day, when you can stand ten minutes in one place without doing anything, or even feeling pressure to do anything, and then another ten minutes, or even twenty, in some other spot, and still you weren't in hurry. And because I couldn't really find anything to do at home, and the summer storm hadn't yet brought the rain upon us, I took a little walk to (the Jyväskylä Artists' Association's Artotheque and gallery) Becker, without any proper reason. I sat there, in the sun at the Becker house stairs for a while and draw some ideas concerning my future projects in my black notebook.

Also, my waterproof small pouches arrived. I finally could proceed to pack the Random Prints (Special Edition) prints for the Hidden Art project in Pori. I had to print the accompanying letters twice because of some spelling mistakes - but luckily the edition of the prints is this time thirty, and not ninety. The project took the rest of my evening: I just sat there in my living room, placing print after print in their own pouches and then writing the very familiar text upon the envelope: 'To You, whoever You are'. This morning I packed the envelopes and now they are travelling towards Pori. The project will take place just about in one month.

Now I should start working with my prints that will be sent in the Gallery G Summer Prints exhibition. There is still one not finished, and it's already after this weekend, when I should send them. I should probably already start to stress if I will make it. But then again, I just won't panic about this, after all, I now get milk in my coffee fresh and cold again, after a few days pause.

Elämä järjestykseen // Organizing Life.

Eilen lähdin aamulla työhuoneelle mieli intoa täynnä. Oman vedosnurkkaukseni läjittyminen on häirinnyt jo kauan: olen säilyttänyt kehystettyjä teoksiani kahdessa puisessa kuljetuslaatikossa, joiden eteen ja kansien päälle on sitten kertynyt kaikki muu.

On sentään sunnuntai.

Yesterday I went to my studio with enthusiasm pouring in my blood. I've been annoyed of one corner of the studio for long: my framed prints have been in two wooden cases, and everything has piled upon them and in front of them. Everytime I've needed something, I've first have had to empty all the stuff from the front and then from the top, and at this time, when I have more framed artworks than ever, I just realized that there's just not enough space. I measured the space very carefully, and last week I bought two shelves wondering, what is it that has kept me from doing this earlier - this isn't so hard or time consuming. I just never learn.

At the studio we emptied the corner and built the first shelf. I was nervous mainly about the outer measurements and if the shelves will fit to the space between the large wooden supporting beams - and they did! I felt warm and fuzzy. It was only when I started to fit the artworks to the shelves I realized my aberration. The spaces between the shelves themselves were too low for my bigger works. It was quite discouraging, when you feel your spirit break and the tiredness crawl in instead, physically really - and how fool you can feel. (This is a live example of what it leads to, when your time is all very fragmented and you have to do everything in many sessions: you just forget all your conclusions and why you have abandoned some idea...) One of the shelves was usable, however: I could place there my smaller framed works, my bigger work in passepartouts, my installation projects in thick tubes and my expensive hand made papers rolled.

Timppa came up with a temporary solution to fix one shelf of one of the cases by turning it into one side and removing all handles and locks. He stapled a plywood cover upon the top (previously side), and nailed a small stopper to the front of the top, and then also a layer of bubble wrap upon the plywood to keep the framed works, protected with plastic wrap, in place. There was enough space in side for my bigger print folders. There were only few works that had to be left on the front floor, as they didn't fit to the shelves, but the final set up is just about what I had wished for: the artworks are relatively easy to reach. Finally there were only the very heavy hotplate and three packs of 70x100cm cardboard that I couldn't fit into the corner. Actually, we found a new place for the hotplate, so probably the cardboards will find one too.

After we got finished I was totally tired. Both building and carrying wooden framed artworks was quite physical, and it didn't help that the space is so low (150cm) that I had to bent myself the whole day to work. And it didn't help either, that I had only one chicken sandwich for lunch. Finally, when we left just before seven, I was somewhat weary and at that point we still had one one hour visit to make. It helped to think that we had a free evening to wait: there were some buffalo wings waiting in the fridge plus some good dip sauce, and dvd movie to watch. I really had the feeling, that I had really earned my free evening, for once.

We arrived home about half past eight and started our oven - but that was it. The fridge was warm (and not just about lukewarm, but really warm), and we really didn't have courage to eat the chicken wings that had been warming all through the day. The freezer had also melted, totally. Luckily for us, pizza place was still open and we could place our orders to have something to eat. At that point I really was so tired, that it took enormous effort to force myself to do anything, but of course we had to empty both fridge and freezer. During the day I had been a bit sad that the sunny warm days were over for a while, but the timing actually couldn't be any better, because we could then place some of the fridge stuff outside on the balcony's cold concrete floor. But all the stuff from the freezer was gone.

When we got to the dvd (with re-heated pizza waiting) a few hours later, of course the movie was one pixelated mash, cleaning didn't help. Finally, the third time we tried with Playstation 3, which luckily usually plays everything, and we got our free time started. At that point - it was almost midnight - I just was so totally drained, that I almost didn't have it in me to eat or even to watch the movie. So, that was my free evening.

I think it was the amount of my tiredness that I didn't then get myself to sleep. Now I'm staring (with empty eyes) some branches that I have collected for one drawing process, and a cutter that I should use today to cut about thirty cardboards to fit, but somehow I just can't get myself going.

Should I just leave it for today, and get my book and get to the sofa to have some rest. It's Sunday, after all.

Hinnan nousu // The Increase in Prices

[Nainen ja tyhjä lintuhäkki / A Woman and an Empty Birdcage, 2014 (~15x15cm+marg)]

Materiaalikustannusten nousun vuoksi joudun nostamaan "Ihmisiä saarillaan" -sarjan vedosten hintoja kympillä ylöspäin, eli 70 eurosta 80 euroon. Hinnan nousu koskee kaikkia sarjan vedoksia.

---

Due to the rising costs of materials I have to rise the price of the 'People On Their Islands' prints (all prints of the series) with 10 euros, from 70 euros to 80 euros. The new price is already seen on my web page, but actually it will take place from June 1 on - in May you can still purchase prints for the 'old' price of 70e, both from the galleries and from me (orders: paivi.hintsanen@coloria.net). It seems that the prices of other print series won't be increasing in near future; I have originally set the price of 'People On Their Islands' series prints so low that increases in material costs are threatening the profit margin, so that's why this series. (And, if the material cost prices will continue rising, it could be, that there will be a small increase in prices again in autumn, but the price of 80 euros will be valid at least until the end of August 2016.)

Today I woke up into apathetic "what's now then" mode which I often have after (dissembling) an exhibition. I somehow didn't find a way to get myself going. I knew that there would be so little time before a few meetings, that there was no use to start making a bigger project, and because I'm extremely bad to return to any project I have started but which has not continued long enough, I just concentrated into fetching myself a cup of coffee after another, and to wait it to affect. I felt exceptionally restless, and I didn't quite know, what I would do with this few hours of idle time I had. Nonetheless I didn't go to pick up the mail, when I heard it landing on our hallway floor. Maybe I somehow tried to protect myself: nowadays, usually, when I receive some mail, there's almost always at least one invoice, and after the unprofitable Hyvinkää exhibition I maybe didn't want to tease myself with new spendings. But I had to, finally: I had to enter into the hallway, darkened by the rainy day, pick up the mail from the floor and open the envelopes. But: no bills. One very fancy advertising envelope for women's magazine and one golden labeled envelope from the Niilo Helander Foundation, including a message of the grant I had received for my Random Prints project.

It's odd how fast the mood and ambiance can swift into totally another, it felt like even the hallway would suddenly felt lighter. So, I had my sunny day after all, even though rain outside has worked its best to cool the weather down.

Taidealetalkoissa // Art sale volunteering

---

I'm soon off to Gallery Becker, where I will be working this afternoon, and possibly also at the evening (after having my late lunch break). This morning I started drawing flower petals with an extrafine archival pigment ink pen with a delicate touch: I have continued the sideproduct project of my aquarelle sketches, which I have made (together with photographing) all week. Time will show, what this will be, if anything at all.

And yes: it is possible to take so many photos that you can have a blister in your shutter-release button pressing finger. (Or maybe that's just a sign of not working enough normally - isn't it so, that the blisters happen for people who haven't used to working?)

Uuden äärellä // Making Something New

Today is the day, when I start making new artworks. I have been tuning myself into the work for the last few days at my aquarelle studio water and colour splashing centre in my balcony, where I have made some sketches and studied good colour combinations, but not made anything specific.

After the spring 2014 I have slipped into some kind of strange in between space: I have made also new artworks, but many of those are uniquie, and I have used so new and experimental (for me) techniques, that making the pictures has really been Work with capital W, and I haven't been able to keep the flow flowing long enough to enjoy my work. Then, when it has been the time to continue, the very first thing in my mind is the laboriusness of the whole project, and the difficulties to get to work (including making some space for the project and other preparing work, which takes usually about two hours). After this I've always lost myself into the maze of all the stages of my work. That is, into that very hollow feeling, when all the processes are not yet tattooed into your mind, but you have to think them over every time. So, I mean to continue, but it will probably take some time.

On the other hand, during the last few years I have also made some new prints to the series I have started earlier, like 'Where the Wind Stopped' (which I designed to have ten prints in it, and I made the last one this year) and 'People on Their Islands' (which now includes eighteen prints of the thirty that will be). The latter one was easier, when I originally planned to continue the series with 4-6 pictures a year, but the first one mentioned is one of those forever-projects which I have 'scripted' quite detailed early at the start of the project, and then they have taken a loooooooong time to proceed - because of another kind of laboriousness. When those kind of works will be finished, I often find myself sighing with relief, not with enthusiasm, even though the final prints would be just what I wanted.

And the third thing, and the one that has taken most of my time during these last few years, is the still invisible work, which I have done for my new big installation-like series of prints. At this point, in spite of all my hard work, I'm not sure if I'm able to complete the project (I need to have to buy some technics for that, and I also need some help for programming, and I can't purchase either of those right now). For the last years I have thought this process to be my main work in my career so far, so the defeatism really has affected to all my working negatively.

It's too easy for me to slip from the inspiring feeling into the feeling of 'duty', and I start to question the sensibleness of the project, when all the joy is gone and it just won't jappen. Why continue, when you have to compromise after compromising, and at the same time your head is filled with new ideas, that you yearn to get to work with. I will try to find a way for my big project to come true, but if there's another compromise waiting, maybe I'll just leave it for a while. That's not really unusual for me. Five or even ten years is not s specially long time to me when creating art, so sometimes you just have to wait and let the process steep.

And while waiting, I can proceed a few steps taking another route.

So, towards new artworks!

Unenomainen iltapäivä // An Afternoon Like Dream

Hienoa outoutta.

This morning and noon I waited anxiously to get out to the sunny weather, but I had to stay in and wait for the cardboard shipment that was dued already yesterday. I didn't even dare to go to the balcony to read amidst light and odours of our small herb garden, because I can't hear the doorbell there... So I just viewed the sun through the window glass, restless. While I was waiting the shipment to arrive, I uploaded some new products to my Society6 Shop and did a bunch of some chores that I have meant to do already several weeks ago. It felt like forever before the cardboard shipment arrived, just before three o'clock. I signed fast, put my shoes on and as I entered the hallway, the light darkened almost unnaturally fast. And there we went, all the waters kept pouring from the sky at once. I took a moment to think if I should go or not, but I decided that I wouldn't upset from the small rain, I just have to get my umbrella. When I got outside the rain had already almost stopped, I really didn't need umbrella. The wet ground and grass smelled, and the soil (which odour I have already missed some time).

I visited shortly Galelry Becker, and while I was there a small mini storm rose. The wind was maniac, it rained almost sideways, there was thunder and some branches fell down from the tree on the yard. The wind calmed down almost as fast as it had risen. I continued my walk towards Janne Laine's and Outi Heiskanen's exhibition at Ti-La, to meet Janne. We all spoke about the strange weather, like we were abroad somewhere. Time went by fast as we talked this and that, and finally we left together, Janne to his car and I headed home. Very near to my home I peaked through the white picket fence and saw some ferns hiding there. Finally I stopped to smell those summery strong green odours all around and to listen the birds sing. I stood a while watching the light sifting through the woods, as the tiny drops drummed my umbrella.

As I came home and put some juice and milk cartons into fridge, I felt like I had just woken up from a dream.

A beautiful strangeness.

My Hyvinkää exhibition at the Promenadigalleria is on until May 25, 2016!

I've always disliked the simple exhibition layout, where the artworks are hanging in straight line, side by side in even intervals. I use also that layout (I'm glad I got to hang almost the whole Where the Wind Stopped series to this neat line this time!), but especially when I fill the space with those rather small prints, I start to look for a different kind of rhythm - pauses and pacing, leaning towards installation. It's never the artworks only, but the whole.

I'm absolutely happy about the Hyvinkää exhibition layout, which I executed having the old house and the space in mind. The old inside walls were covered with chipboard panels, which also cut the uniform wall surfaces into visual pieces. I didn't want to add more to the scattered feel by hanging the artworks everywhere, so I left a lot of empty wall space also because of that: the space and divine light can fulfill their own job. (At home when I looked at some photos from the exhibition, of the chair in the front of the window, and it could be from some Hammershøi painting... The Light!)

In Hyvinkää I succeed in pacing so well, that you can take some photos at the exhibition, where none of my artworks can be seen at all!
