Those big small things. My Coloria Rain was born in summer 2020 to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of my coloria.net website, and has grown since, until it received it final form at the beginning of September. Not it is shown at the Sustainable Colour exhibition at the Craft Museum of Finland, until the beginning of December. There are few hundred of those crotcheted, natural dyed droplets hanging from three clouds.

The installation is a perfect example of the birth of my biggest projects: they are born from a total lack of understanding proportions. As I was attaching droplets, I cursed my unbelievable uncapablity of reading between lines. Like, if someone is looking astonished and wondering out loud, if I am really attach that many droples, there could be some kind of hint about the size of the project. But no - I hear the words, but somehow always dismiss everything else. From time to time again I find myself despair in the mids of some project, wondering why, again, I've got this kind of insane amount of work.

And of course I won't learn anything. After I had attached all droplets and I was walking back home completely tired, I swore I would never make these kinds of project ever again. Never! But two days after the clouds had been placed on the ceiling, I was already thingking, that it was really not as bad, and why not continue with a ten thousand droplets of the same kind (of which I had started talking as a joke a bit earlier).

And I actually have started to crothet droplets for my even bigger installation.

This would have been nothing without help. At the deepest moment of despair my life-partner Timo Sälekivi came to help with me to attach the droplets and invented an easier way to do it, which made the project a lot faster to do. The clouds were built by the museum technician Janne Syrjänen, who also mastered the setting up of the installation. In building the installation he was helped by Otto Vepsäläinen. Janne was responsible also for the lights which created  the most beautiful, translucent shadow rain on the walls! The Craft Museum of Finland helped me with so many things with this installation, I really can't even list them all. So I just say: thank you!

---

Now my first exposure batch of my anthotype project have been exposuring about for a week in our living room (!) window. This was the most important as well as difficult part of the project to make. Now I'm making second batch of the traditional natural dyes, and later, in summer, I'll be able to pick flowers to my project, but these phases will be nowhere near as hard as this first one. Now I'm trying to concentrate this project in two days of the week, so I can make other projects on other days more freely.

A big relief was also, when I finally made schedules for all of my projects. Or more likely, a time table for each day, for what to do and when. It helps so I don't do everything at the same time (and also remember to eat and have a coffee break).

Another relief has been dividing these projects into smaller sections. When I don't get things finished each day or even every other week, it easily brings out the delusion, that I haven't done anything - even though the projects have progressed well in twelve-hour workdays in seven days a week. It helps a lot, when I can over line things from my list after I've done them. Apparently I just need a proof to myself that the things are proceeding and they will!

I just have to be content on the fact that when there is lot on it's way and the projects are laborious, the finish line won't be reached in a day.

Everything will work out just fine.

Antotypiaa - Anthotype

Tsemppi on vähän haussa.

---

When I think about how little I've worked in last few weeks with anything productive, I could state that my tiredness is disproportionate. Right now I should be very innovative and find new lifebuoys for myself, but I just want to lay here on slowly sinkin plank and let everything be. Even small things start to be insurmountable. When my keyboard drivers go mad and after hitting a letter I get seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeverrrrrrrrrrral letters or missing out some (a problem I thought I've already fixed when it first happened about few weeks ago), I just boringly stare the monitor before moving to couch to stare outside. The fighting spirit is a bit lost right now. At the same time there are some seeds of consolation: every little print order has been so Great Gift that I've had to stop myself from getting out to hug these people who are buying my art. If I've spoken about roller-coaster of feelings before, I've not known what I've spoken then.

I've already accepted that my anthotype testing won't probably happen as I had planned. I've tried to remind myself that I've already waited for a year, and I can really wait for another year to make it happen the way I planned. These kinds of projects are slow anyway - so what's my hurry? Even then a little pressure is in my head - I really can't help it: I have a clear vision, and it's really hard to do something just about, and in no case I want to give up. Besides, playing with natural dyes has brought some gladness in my life. The processes are slow (and would benefit of this time of isolation, if everything else hadn't come to eat the valuable time these processes need). I try to zen my way through it. In every morning I set the test papers on our kitchen table and brush dye upon them, layers upon layers, slowly. I'm late with this process, yes, but I can't make time go any slower by rushing things.

You can follow my work with this process in my Anthotypical blog. At the moment it's all about preparation but later I'll update the information about the art projects for which I'm making these tests.

Kuvia matkalta Kyyneltarhaan / Pictures from the Way to the Garden of Tears

Some unique aquarelles (fruits of the tree of tears) and six prints from the series #Lähestyminen #Approaching now exhibited @kirjakahvila #turunkirjakahvila through May. There's also a book of my #kyynelpuutarhurinpäiväkirja #thediaryofateargardener at the cafe for viewing. This brings memories: almost 30 years ago I studied in #Turku and I spent here time quite a lot then - the book cafe hasn't really changed since! I just hope this exhibition won't end as badly as the previous one at the nearby Raatihuone gallery in 2011: eleven prints were stolen from my exhibition then... If everything goes well this time, maybe I'll apply exhibition time from #galleriajoella @galleriajoella, where we also visited today - I fell in love with the exhibition space filled with light. .

Erilaisia muotokuvaversioita kertyi melkein kaksi sataa.

Yksi niistä on kuudentoista kuvan sarja, jonka kaivoin pääsiäisen aikana luonnoslaatikosta esille.

---

At the end of the week I went to hang a few pictures from the Way to the Garden of Tears to the Turku Book Café: Fruits from the Tree of the Tears of Good and Bad aquarelles and some test prints that were born when I was searching my way to the nine Tear Artisans. When I was still pondering if I'll leave the prints hidden in my drawers or if I'll exhibit them, I titled the series Searching for the Tear Artisans, but last week I gave it the title Approaching.

In the Diary of the Tear Gardener I write about how hard it was to create the portraits of these Tear artisans, but there are still a lot of untold stories on that subject. I really made dozens of tryouts before finding the final technique and final images. I tried ink drawings and aquarelles, and paper / photocopy printing and photographic techniques - and I tried several papers from very very thing 15 g/m Japanese mulberry paper to 600 g/m cotton paper. I made almost two hundred versions of portraits. Most of them are very sketchy, which truly are reflecting the search process, and are really not independent artworks as themselves. But then there are some images, that really didn't became what I then was looking for, but they turned out to be something else: artworks themselves, some fragmentary memories from my way to the Garden of tears.

One of those artworks is the sixteen pictures series, which I took out for the first time in three years in last Easter. This was the last test series before the final Tear Artisan artworks: I made these works by over-printing images on Hahnemuhle Torchon paper - I just love the texture on that paper. The images repeat themselves and others of the series, the same faces in various versions, the same eyes closed. I was searching for the place to begin, I was looking for some clue about being at the right spot, but at that point, then, I didn't reach the Tear Artisans I was searching. Still these pictures already show something about the future Tear Artisans, of the Silent one, of the Artisan of the Grief, and of the Artisan of the Frost. There's a six months interval between this series and the final Tear Artisans prints.

Originally I was thinking to save these torchon prints on their archival box - after all, they are only stages towards the final images. But now when I look at those, I really don't see them only as a process as I did then. The Tear Artisans are already in their own portraits, having their own selves, and the search process no longer bothers these prints: they can be what they truly are - unique artworks.

I took six of the prints from this Approaching series to the book cafe (plus the tear aquarelles). It was not really any conventional exhibition set up - the prints are quite close to each other and the un-grounded paper curls up a bit when it is hanging only with one fishing-line, but in this place I didn't find it disturbing at all.

When I was living in Turku almost thirty years ago, I often came to the cafe to draw and write. Now when I have examined my work with the Garden of Tears theme, and after finding always older and older sketches and notes about it, I would not be surpised at all, if the first markings were made right here. Who knows?

(On my IG account some other images of my Turku trip too: mostly indulging myself wth food - Italian ice cream / gelato and seafood served on ice on snowy icy weather.)

Kuivaa - Dry

- Malmin apurahaselvitys (koskien viime vuonna Colorialle saamaani apurahaa)
- Mela-vakuutuksen hakeminen (koskien tämän vuoden työskentelyapurahaani)
- Kyyneltäjä-korttien leikkaus (yksi erä korteista saapui hieman epäkeskitettynä; ostin ne käytännössä koodilla, jonka sain kompensaatioksi edellisestä reklamaatiostani, ja olin niin täynnä reklamointia, etten enää jaksanut reklamoida toista - tai itseasiassa kolmatta kertaa)
(- Inktober)

---

My friend has read my blog for a week, and asks now if my life is always this dull. I reply honestly, that not always. But still there are too many of of these weeks made of filling and sending forms and papers around. I agree with her that I should make another daily blogging project at some time, when it's more about my work with exhibition preparation. (Though - do I have then time to write anything?)

The most annoying thing is, that the first things on my to do list at the beginning of the week were:
- Send short description and press images to Korjaamo Design Market
- Make a report of a grant use for Malm foundation (last year for Coloria)
- Apply Mela insurance (for this years working grant)
- Cutting the Tear Artisans portcards (one batch arrived a bit noncenteres; but as I bought them actually using a code that I had received from my reclamation before, and I was so filled with reclamations one after another, I didn't bother to make yet another one
(- Inktober)

Not one of these I managed to do, when more acute stuff arrived to my email the whole time. Maybe then today, on Sunday. Before bed time, at some point.

Almost everything else I'll get to do next week, except taking part to Inktober, which I had planned for a long time. (Some thing, mostly on Twitter, daily ink drawing or so.) I thought, that this year I would take part to the event, and with a twist: I decided to make my own plant dye based inks for the project. They are not maybe durable and fast enough to be used in final artworks, but I use my own inks a lot in sketching and they can be seen also in my final artworks as scanned / digitized. But when I was lying fluishly in bed in the end of September, I realised, that it won't be happening this year either. I don't want to force it to fit in my schedule, because then it stops being fun. So, I miss Inktober this year (too), and also making ink (can't find my arabic gum anywhere!) But there are some overgrown thai basil waiting on my kitchen table. I've heard that they might give some dye, so I decide to try before tossing them to trash. (When I look at the very light yellowish dye, I agree that maybe I have wished too much, but on the other hand, those other dried out herbs photograph divinely well.)

I decided that my back is well enough to have a long walk, but absolutely too aching still to cleaning. So, cleaning must wait. I don't really mind, this is a good Sunday as it is.

Toimistopäivä - An Office Day

Kupillinen kahvia, ja toinenkin, ja aamu ja iltapäivä ohittuu nopeasti sähköpostin äärellä. Lähtötilanne: 76 lukematonta/reagoimatonta viestiä. Toiveena olisi hoitaa ainakin puolet alta pois.

Toinen päivän näyttelyjuttu koskee Serlachius-museon ensi vuoden puolella aukeavaa näyttelyä, johon Vaskenruosteyrttitarha-teokseni on menossa esille.

(Muut nippelihommat:
Society6:lta dollarimuodossa tulleiden tilitysten konversio euroiksi ja kuittien tulostus kirjanpitoon;
Yritän mennä myöntämään Suomi-valtuutukset kirjanpitäjälle, mutta eihän se tietenkään onnistu (tässä vaiheessa tunnustan, etten edes tiedä, mitä tein, seurasin vain ohjeita - eikä sittenkään onnistunut);
Neuvottelut ensi vuoden Habitare-paikasta ovat alkaneet - en ole ihan tyytyväinen minulle tarjottuun osastoon, joten asiasta vielä neuvotellaan;
Tiedustelen eräästä kirjankansiprojektista, jonka olen luvannut tänä vuonna tehdä;

---

One cup of coffee, and another one, and so the morning and early afternoon go by fast reading and replying to emails. Starting point: 76 messages to read and react. I wish that I could manage about half of them. Luckily not all of them are not so time consuming, and some of them I've received in two or three times, so I can toss some to trash without doing anything.

I've received an exhibition invitation (more about this one after writing contract, but it's not a traditional gallery space anyway). I reply and receive more information. I print some papers and make some notes, and leave it to be for a while.

There's also another exhibition coming up: next year an exhibition opens in Serlachius museum where my Copper Rust Herb Garden will be included. I thought that I could reply the exhibition architect fast about the size and requirements of my artwork, but thinking the whole process throughout and making a new draft of design takes time. At two I finally realise that I haven't eaten anything during the day, just drank coffee, and right after sending the message I'll have my lunch break. (Some thai cooking, minced meat with tomatos, noodless, a lot of dried chilli and fresh coriander; I watch Netflix for a while and continue with my natural dye freetime project for a while.)

After lunch I try to familiarize myself with the materials I received from some Finnish copyright organisations. I joined Sanasto (writers) last week, and received some printed material which I read through. I also went and registered myself to Kopiosto (pictures).

I update Hanna Holma's interview to Plankko page and make also some other publicity / media work for Plankko artists.

(Other small bits and bobs:
Converting Society6 payments from dollars to euros, and printing receipts to my bookkeeping;
I try to go and make some important system changes for my accountant, but that doesn't just work out - I need to continue with this later;
I start the negotiations about next year's Habitare booth;
I ask about one book cover project that I've promised to make this fall;
I sent a bit annoying email to one person about one press release - I'm always meticulous about some word choices and can't really stand when people use words without thinking what they actually mean, and how significant they can be in communication - and then I feel myself as a too pedantic fussy.)

When time gets closer to four I start to get annoyed. For a few hours already I have watched the beautiful sunlight outside, but I have to wait inside, while waiting DHL delivery to come. I thought it would come before lunch time, but here I am still waiting, and there would be just a beautiful dark clouds + sun shine + colourful foliage combo outside, that I have been waiting for weeks. I try to take some photos through an open window, but the photos looks just like they were taken from the window. At five I finally receive a message that my delivery is arriving before the end of the day, and finally it arrives at seven.

I'm a bit vexed about waiting, and about the fact, that I didn't have time to do anything creative during the day. That about the fact that there are still 70 messages waiting in my email, even though I received just about a dozen new ones. I just worry that the things are starting to pile again - but still I decide to act sensibly and give up work for today. I need to get out, even if it's just a walk to a shop to get more light bulbs to this darkening apartment. (I still fetch my notebook and pigment ink pen and place them next to couch, in case I'll draw something later while watching telly.)

Sanoilla, sanoista, sanoihin / With words, from words, to words

I'm slowly getting back to life after one more flu week. And my old friend, Time Panic, is trying to visit me again. Originally I planned to work with my own creative projects from March until the end of summer, but one project was postponed from the beginning of the year. At first I tried to calm myself thinking that I can manage the project fully in March - it's only one month and then I'll have time from April on - but then there was some unexpected delay with other stuff, and then my flu begun, and suddenly the April has vanished partly from my calendar. There's some time for my own creative work in small fragments only, left when everything else is finished. And it's not very promising, when I feel convalescent all the time, not healthy...

I'm not totally stuck, however. I've written some of my texts in bed: not using pen, but my mind has both written and edited, and I've tried to make some concrete notes now and then. Natural editing system, that is, and actually quite a good one. Last week I also received my copy of Ikonimaalari magazine (Icon Painter) in which my very first pigment column was published.

And I'm happy that my state brings out some unintented rebellion. I don't know why is it, that I tend to miss Earth Hour - putting lights out for an hour - almost every year, but this time I exceeded myself! I shared this for my friends in Facebook, so why not here: First I lied the whole day in my bed with flu, and when I woke up, it was sooo dark. I of course put the lights on: first to bedroom and living room, and then to hallway; then I went to put a tea kettle on and left the kitchen light on while I went to read my email to my office room (where I also put the lights on). Well, we don't have any more rooms (except the bathroom). I had planned to just check out my email very fast and then return to kitchen to my tea, but I somehow it took me almost an hour, before I returned to kitchen, took my tea, and returned to my bed, turning off the lights as I went. It was only then when I realised that it had been the Earth Hour, and through that time, and only for that hour, our apartment had shined like a lantern in the darkness. (Except the bathroom, which was dark, but there is not window which would have shown to the people outside that there was even one room dark...)

Right now I feel that this story above is like allegory of my life at the moment.

Maybe I should just accept  the fact, that life goes as it goes, and I'm just enjoying a ride. There will be yet another flu in some time, and maybe then, the next time, when I get some True Time for my own creative work, I can really Appreciate it. And maybe next time during Earth Hour I remember to turn the lights off - or at least I try to not turn them all on.

Takaisin töissä / Back to work

...Well, I didn't get to have any break. My 'break' begun with all kinds of small errands starting to pile in front of me. I could have left some of them to do later, but I thought that I rather make them in no rush now than in panic mode a couple of days later.

I also started to fix some smaller things, that have long-waited better time, and went with the flow from one surprise task to another. At Habitare a couple of my clients told, that they've found it hard to find any print series from my website, as there aren't any headlines in any of the pages. I went to check upon this, and yes, somehow all the headlines had vanished. After trying several hours to solve the problem with css I ended up to add the headlines manually to each page. That took one of my 'holidays' just like that. While I was working with headlines I also noticed that all of my Absent prints were missing from the website since the gallery system had changed. I spent the second day remaking the site - there are 200 of them, so it took some time. Now they are all shown again, but the sold out / only few left infos are still missing from the page. I'll have to return to the matter sometimes soon.

The prize of the naiiviest thought of the year was my long-dominated assumption, that I would just hygge my way through the following weekend's Hygge2017 lifestyle event (where I have booth D204). I had planned just to update and edit stuff I had with me in Habitare, relaxing and eating candy, and that's about that. Of course the straight forward road was blocked with a few practical stuffs that I couldn't forsee in anyway, and it has been a bit hard to find roundabouts. The latest challenge revealed itself yesterday: how to cover the OSB walls, when you can't paint them. It's my own stupidity: once again I assumed things and not verified how it is. When I booked the booth I just saw a tiny photo of a 'timber booth' they had to offer, and I just somehow assumed that the walls must be birch plywood or something else more eye-pleasing (the theme of the area is home, so I instantly thought about the aesthetic surroundings while you are spending time home). Well, I thought about some other timber panel options, but oriented strand board was not one of them... It is the same busy-looking flakeboard you can often see in building sites.

I had my Habitare settings ruling my head also otherwise... I realized quite late that the spotlights and carpet are extrapaid option (not included like in Habitare), so I'm guessing that instead of sophisticated 'warm art experience for your homes' themed booth I had planned, I'm offering a shady backyard art shed experience, with a very tired and flegmatic artist sitting mute in the corner.

These all kinds of small problems are making me so tired, that I almost can't hear the voice of my little optimist inside me: these are all small things and any problems are made for you to use your creativity.

Anyway, welcome to my art shed in Hygge2017 next weekend!

Kyynelten kerääjä / Collecting Tears

Marraskuu, sarjasta Kyynelpuutarhurin päiväkirjamerkintöjä
November, from the series Notes From the Diary of the Tear Gardener

Jatkan Kyynelpuutarhurin työtäni...

I'm continuing my work as a tear gardener...

---

Papers and text through the whole March. I've been filling grant applications, written several plans and reports, and sketches, synopses, and treatments. And in between I have also written - very happily - about colours for my writing studies. And in those studies I read one book by Mia Kankimäki (about Japanese Sei Shōnagon, unfortunately not translated into English, yet), which was an unbelievable reading experinece. I haven't read such a book for so long time - when it ended, it felt like one friend had gone.

I'd like to keep this feeling and read more, almost anything - this is so rare feeling for me. I'm keeping myself from doing it, and I just try to get through my March to do -list, which I just have to make happen. This time the time won't give up for me. One thing on the list - since January - was starting my 'Tear Collection'. I opened the website already at the beginning of March (direct URL: paivihintsanen.fi/tears), but somehow I just haven't much made noise about it.

Maybe the April 'charging' - even though I'm working the month through - will help in this continuous feeling of things not happening. (Which is not even true: when I look at the things I've overlined from my list, I can just think, that I'm like a small but very efficient factory!)

But maybe a break in everyday life - or different kind of everyday life for a while - will help to change one's perspective.

Japanista Kalevalaan // From Japan to Kalevala

--

Loppuviikosta on tarkoitus viedä koko kuvasarja kehystettäväksi Habitarea varten. Kuvatuksi sitä en ole edelleenkään saanut. Pitää ottaa itseään niskasta kiinni.

Yesterday we went to pack the works from the Plankko exhibition, which ended on the last day of July. I picked my 'Branches of the Tree of Tears' series prints off the wall and then brought some postcards of the series to the downstairs Emalipuu shop. How bad timing is that? The worst ever, but this time I couldn't help it.

I also sold some prints from the exhibition, and I don't have to bite my nails anymore wondering if they will sell. It's like that with new series every time: you just wait anxiously to know, if they are the kind that people will pick and take home, or if they are the kind that stays at the closet forever. I don't make my prints just the sales in mind, of course, but because I need to and those ideas filling my head make me to make these pictures, but at that point, when the pictures are finished, I wouldn't like them to be forgotten. Because of these low income times, making a new series is quite a big challenge financially. Those first prints of a new series carry always also the weight of all the test prints (the cost of papers and inks), so the first sales of the prints always help to rise back to the normal situation...

This time I was more nervous than in average about how the new works would be perceived... because somehow I just ended 'wandering around' - not very usual for me - I somehow lost the clear visual image I had had in my head for years and ended up doing something completely different.

As I started making the print series I got some inspiration from the Japanese wood block prints depicting cherry tree branches; I admired the simplicity, sensitive hues and plain layouts I wanted to replicate. When I started almost all images had a near white background with only a few very thin aquarelle-like layers of colour, hardly noticeable. But I just felt, that somehow the rough surface just wanted to be there - splashes and scratches - and finally the only direct lead to a Japanese wood block print was the proportion of the paper which I found in some old woo dblock print. But maybe there is still something else hinting about the Japanese influence too: many of the viewers have commented that when they see my 'Tears of Sorrow', it reminds them from the 'famous wave picture' (which I guess means the 'Great Wave of Kanagawa' by Katsushika Hokusai). One comment was that in my works 'the Japanese art meets Kalevala' (which is the Finnish national epic) - and that 'the Kalevala wins.' And yes - that is absolutely how the prints look!

---

I should take the series to be framed for Habitare at the end of this week. I still haven't been able to take proper photos. I should... Soon.
