Värisade - Coloria Rain

 

Niitä suuria pieniä asioita. Värisade syntyi viime vuoden kesällä työhuoneeni ikkunaan coloria.net-sivustoni 20-vuotisjuhlan kunniaksi, kasvoi siinä reilun vuoden ja lopulta sai lopullisen muotonsa syyskuun alussa. Nyt se on esillä Vihreää väriä -näyttelyssä Suomen käsityön museossa 5.12.2021 saakka. Pilvissä roikkuu muutamia satoja virkattuja pisaroita, jotka on kaikki värjätty luonnonväreillä.

Teos on hyvä esimerkki siitä, miten nämä suuret projektini syntyvät: totaalisesta mittasuhteiden ymmärtämättömyydestä. Pisaroita pilviin kiinnittäessäni manailin sitä, etten kykene ymmärtämään hienovaraisia vihjailuja. Kuten sitä, että jos joku ihmettelee hämmästyneen näköisenä, että aionko todella kiinnittää noin paljon pisaroita, ihmetys saattaisi sisältää jonkinlaisen vihjeen projektin suuritöisyydestä. Mutta ei - kuulen kyllä sanat, mutta jotenkin onnistun sivuuttamaan kaiken muun. Toistuvasti löydän itseni roikkumassa jossain vaiheessa projektia epätoivon ja totaalisen epäuskon rajamailla ihmetellen sitä, että olen taas ihan järjettömään työmäärään hautautuneena.

Enkä tietenkään opi mitään. Sinä iltana, kun olin saanut pisarat kiinni ja vaelsin voipuneena kotiin, ajattelin, että mitään vastaavaa en kyllä koskaan ikinä enää tee. Mutta kaksi päivää sen jälkeen, kun pilvet olivat nousseet kattoon, ajattelin jo, että ei se niin hirveää ollutkaan, ja voisin ihan hyvin toteuttaa (alunperin ihan vitsinä ilmaan heittämäni) kymmenen tuhannen pisaran projektin.

Ja aloin virkata pisaroita sitä vielä suurempaa installaatiota varten.

Ilman apua ei tämäkään työ syntynyt. Epätoivon hetkellä pisaroita tuli avukseni kiinnittämään puolisoni Timo Sälekivi, joka myös keksi helpomman tavan ja nopeutti siten prosessia. Pilvet teokseeni rakensi Suomen käsityön museon museomestari Janne Syrjänen, jolle kuuluu myös suurin kiitos ripustustyöstä. Ripustuksessa pilvimestarin apuna hääräsi Otto Vepsäläinen. Jannelle kiitos myös upeasta valaisusta, jonka seurauksena Värisade sai seinälle seurakseen uskomattoman hienon, läpikuultavan varjosateen! Suomen käsityön museolle olen suuresti kiitollinen aika monesta asiasta tämän työn suhteen!

Those big small things. My Coloria Rain was born in summer 2020 to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of my coloria.net website, and has grown since, until it received it final form at the beginning of September. Not it is shown at the Sustainable Colour exhibition at the Craft Museum of Finland, until the beginning of December. There are few hundred of those crotcheted, natural dyed droplets hanging from three clouds.

The installation is a perfect example of the birth of my biggest projects: they are born from a total lack of understanding proportions. As I was attaching droplets, I cursed my unbelievable uncapablity of reading between lines. Like, if someone is looking astonished and wondering out loud, if I am really attach that many droples, there could be some kind of hint about the size of the project. But no - I hear the words, but somehow always dismiss everything else. From time to time again I find myself despair in the mids of some project, wondering why, again, I've got this kind of insane amount of work.

And of course I won't learn anything. After I had attached all droplets and I was walking back home completely tired, I swore I would never make these kinds of project ever again. Never! But two days after the clouds had been placed on the ceiling, I was already thingking, that it was really not as bad, and why not continue with a ten thousand droplets of the same kind (of which I had started talking as a joke a bit earlier).

And I actually have started to crothet droplets for my even bigger installation.

This would have been nothing without help. At the deepest moment of despair my life-partner Timo Sälekivi came to help with me to attach the droplets and invented an easier way to do it, which made the project a lot faster to do. The clouds were built by the museum technician Janne Syrjänen, who also mastered the setting up of the installation. In building the installation he was helped by Otto Vepsäläinen. Janne was responsible also for the lights which created  the most beautiful, translucent shadow rain on the walls! The Craft Museum of Finland helped me with so many things with this installation, I really can't even list them all. So I just say: thank you!

Yhtäaikaisuus

Tänään kirjoitin Instagramissa, kuinka puoleentoista vuoteen ei ole työrintamalla tapahtunut mitään, ja nyt kaikki tapahtuu yhtäaikaa. Aloin miettiä, että sehän ei ole totta, koska koko ajanhan on tapahtunut kaikenlaista, mutta nyt vain sattuu useampi pitkä ja suunniteltu projekti toteutumaan yhtäaikaa, syyskuun alkupuolella. Niin sanottu kulminoitumispiste on kaikilla sama: Konstrundan 4.-5.9.2021, Vihreää väriä -näyttelyn avautuminen Suomen käsityön museossa 11.9.2021 ja Habitare seuraavalla viikolla. (Tai no, tilannehan ainakin Habitaren osalta voi vielä muuttua. AVI antanee uusia rajoituksia huomenna tai ylihuomenna.)

Näistä Vihreää väriä -näyttely on ehkä se Suurin ja Tärkein - olen työskennellut näyttelyn parissa monin tavoin jo viime vuoden loppupuolelta. Olen ollut mukana käsikirjoittamassa näyttelyä ja luonut kirjoittanut näyttelytekstejä, ideoinut näyttelyyn luonnonväriympyröiden sarjan ja organisoinut niiden värjäyksen (Värjärikilta ry:n jäsenet ovat värjänneet suurimman osan, mutta tokihan värjäsin muutamia näytteitä itsekin), olen käsikirjoittanut muutamia näyttelyyn esille tulevia lyhyitä värjäysprosessivideoita, ja vielä on muutama pienempi näyttelyyn liittyvä juttu työn alla. Ja näyttelyssä on esillä myös yksi luonnonväriteokseni - kuva antaa siitä hieman vinkkiä.

Tämä on ollut jotenkin kaikin puolin ihana projekti. Väristä kirjoittaminen on aina ollut itselleni terapiaa, ja tällä kertaa paitsi tiesi, että tekstilläni on tarkoitus (usein tuntuu, että Coloriaan kokoamani tieto on vain tärkeämmältä työltä aikaa vievä harrastus---) - koko projekti on myös tukenut apurahatyöskentelyä antotypiaprojektini ja siihen liittyvien juttujen parissa. Harvoin loksahtaa kaksi projektia niin hyvin yhteen kuin mitä nyt on käynyt!

Montaa muutakin työprojektia olen tämän vuoden aikana toki edistänyt - moni projekti etenee hissukseen taustalla, ja tänä vuonna poikkeuksellisen hyvässä symbioosissa keskenään!

I just was thinking that in my work scene nothing has happened in one and a half year, and now suddenly everything happens. But that is not true at all. All kinds of things are happening all the time, but now it just happens, that many of those longer planned projects will take place at the same time, at the beginning of September. First Konstrundan event on September 4-5, then the opening of an exhibition Sustainable colour at the Craft Museum of Finland on the very following week, and Habitare event the next week. (If Habitare happens at all - new safety guidelines will be announed tomorrow or a day after that.)

Of these, the Sustainable colour exhibition is probably the biggest and the most important one for me. I've worked with the exhibition in many ways from the end of last year. I've taken part in planning the exhibition as well as I have written exhibition texts. I've also planned the way the natural dyes are exhibited and I've organised the dyeing process of the samples (the sample yarns are dyed by the members of Värjärikilta, which is a Finnish natural dyer's association; and of course I dyed a few samples also myself). I've transcripted a few short natural dye process videos, and there are still a few things on their way. And also one of my natural dye pieces will be exhibited at the museum - the main photo gives a hint what will be shown.

This has been absolutely wonderful project in every way. I've always considered writing, and especially writing about colour, some kind of therapy, and this time I knew all the time, that there will be a purpose with my words (usually I feel, that writing for my Coloria.net website is just a vain hobby taking time from everything important---) Also, the whole project has been so important for my work with my anthotype project. It's not usual that two of my project are so perfectly inline as these two have been!

There are many other projects I have continued with this year. They are evolving slowly in the background - and this year everything is happening in some kind of symbiotic relationship!
