Hullu vuosi - A Mad Year

Kuva: Linnea Kuhmonen Photography/@photolinnea

Vihdoin tuli joulukuu, uusi vaarallisten vauhdikkaiden mutkien vuoristorata (toivoakseni juuri ennen pitkää tasaista vaihetta!)

***

I thought it would be better not to look back at this year at all, just to keep my mind clear. But I guess that some kind of summary is at place. Just to have something to get back at some time later, when the times are serene again, and I can then more easily to read about this wild wild year, when the whole covid epicemic was just a foot note amongst everything else. And here's how it all went:

After the first shock of the covid news at the first quarter of the year I realised, that when everything is cancelled, I was finally getting what I had always wished for: some working time with no interruptions, which would give me a possibility to focus fully on my creative work. Looking back at that time now, I see especially clearly, that it was everything but. The time was spent to put down those small financial and mental fires all around, and you cannot really work with any creative at that kind of situation - or at least I learnt that I can't.

During the spring and at the beginning of summer I missed my mum so much - she is living at the care home just a few kilometers from us, but then unreachable. I found comforting to know that she was living in her own world, in which we exist only when she sees us. Some photos gave us relief, and messages, when we saw and heard that everything is well. As well as the knowledge of the fact, that it was us who suffered the distance mostly, not mum. The summer brought along the biggest remedy, when, after several months that felt like years, we finally got to meet outside and walk together in summery garden. Is there a bigger happiness than when you find out, that your own mum still recognizes you? That must have been my biggest fear - that during these distanced months she would disappear even further into her own world, where we wouldn't exist even when we'd come around. Or that she would just disappear, completely, for the final time.

Somewhere behind, following the footsteps of this first fear, was another fright travelling along: I wasn't so much afraid of my emptying bank account, but I was afraid that it would soon be the day when I couldn't pay my rent (well, these things go hand in hand). With the Jyväskylä city atelier support grant, government support for entrepreuners, my studio rent was lowered for a few months and a special grant from the Art Council of Finland I survived the worst phase. Still, the very next day after my stroke, when I was on my hospital bed, I suddenly realized that I'd have to cancel my open doors event at my studio next weekend, and at that same time I would miss about one month's rent of income, and that was my biggest worry. (Of course everything else came then later, but I'm now thinking that I was kind of lucky to perceive this whole situation so slowly, so that not everything came to me at once.)

My fit and everything that followed it minimized my other worries quite effectively. Suddenly my time was taken by visiting doctors and getting my blood sucked in laboratories. Those horrendous white envelopes from the hospital kept dropping on our hallwayfloor, not so often but always equally horrifying, filled with scary and cryptic words that didn't open even with the help of dictionary. From one clinic to another and yet to another, a new doctor and new nurses one after another. An overwhelming exhaustion, when my mind couldn't realise all the matters, which started to  pile one over another. And in between all this inexplicable issues I spent my autumn doing smaller and smaller things, as everything got more heavier each day.

On the other hand, suddenly I felt how writing the grant applications suddenly felt so comfortable and controllable: I had the plans ready and thinking about the future was like therapy in all that chaos. I loved the think about the time in near future, when everything would be ok again. I filled papers, I managed things, but my creative work was in zero. To me making one artwork is always like writing a novel, and now my mind just couldn't carry a story through. I spent a few months doing absolutely nothing. I tried, though. At my studio I set my work desk for a few slow process experiments. But mainly I just sat there on my red armchair in the dim lit room and listened to music. Or just nothing, when I couldn't find the strength to attach the headphones jack. So I didn't publich my colour and chemistry themed book, or any other printed matters during the autumn. I didn't make my Colour Wheels gone Mad print series or my funny ice cream monotypes. Not to mention about my artworks. I tried to continue making the inventory I had started, but even that was too much. All those things I had planned and not made added some worry levels on my head.

In my inner depression I needed some use for my head, or just something to do, but when you are in that kind of state, nothing happens by forcing. I got some ideas from time to time, but it was too laborous for me to write them down. But then again, slowly, I started to return back to my life. First by writing. One Sunday morning I just woke up and wrote dozens of haikus and planned a new print series. At home I wore my pyjamas but still boiled some onion skins and some plants I had collected to dyes and then made pigments from them, and I removed some anthotype prints from under their films (where they had been from the spring), and thinking about the process and writing about it started to form small fasteners to my everyday life. Finally I decided to take part to a display window competition in my hometown Jyväsylä. I decided to have open doors at my studio before the Christmas time. I decided to create new schedules for all the projects that I didn't make this autumn, and thus I removed them from the sad list to the list of the projects I can hardly wait to begin to work with.

And then, finally, December started, with it's new dangerous and speedy curves (hopefully the last ones before the long flat stage!) This month started with several worrying and sad new, and there were so many of them that I totally forgot to worry about anything else. I have never been as surprised before, as I was, when I opened my email and read that I had received a two year working grant from Kone Foundation. It was loke some dreamy message from some other unreal dimension. In the sad and worrying situation I was in at the time, I didn't dare - sort of - to be happy about it, it was just too much to handle. But now, when the biggest worries have vanished a bit, it slowly starts to occupy my mind: I really can work with my slow art projects for two whole years. It was remarkable fasther to understand, when I heard that my display window had won the window competition. Just a perfect size news to my tiny brain. A big big joy amidst all the fuss.

And now I am here. A few hours before the New Year. During 2020 I've seen several times that a lot can happen even in a few days time, and even in just a few seconds. Those life-changing things, that are changing the basic steps of a normal life forever. But not necessarily to something worse - just different.

At the moment I'm preparing myself for my new life. I'll start working with my grant at the beginning of the year. It feels strangely fairytalelike (and really as unreal as it was in the day I heard about my grant), that for two years now I can concentrate to those experimental projects, to which I've had to dig some time splinders here and there, exhausting myself. Finally I have a two year permission to work slowly and to focus on the essential.

I don't assume, that my life would be a straight flat troublefree line from here on, there must be those hard rises and scary bends coming at some point. But now I feel that I have my safety belt attached better and tighter and I have a stronger trust on that I don't fall off.

So, you all - fasten your seat belts, the new year will start soon!

Toimistopäivä - An Office Day

Kupillinen kahvia, ja toinenkin, ja aamu ja iltapäivä ohittuu nopeasti sähköpostin äärellä. Lähtötilanne: 76 lukematonta/reagoimatonta viestiä. Toiveena olisi hoitaa ainakin puolet alta pois.

Toinen päivän näyttelyjuttu koskee Serlachius-museon ensi vuoden puolella aukeavaa näyttelyä, johon Vaskenruosteyrttitarha-teokseni on menossa esille.

(Muut nippelihommat:
Society6:lta dollarimuodossa tulleiden tilitysten konversio euroiksi ja kuittien tulostus kirjanpitoon;
Yritän mennä myöntämään Suomi-valtuutukset kirjanpitäjälle, mutta eihän se tietenkään onnistu (tässä vaiheessa tunnustan, etten edes tiedä, mitä tein, seurasin vain ohjeita - eikä sittenkään onnistunut);
Neuvottelut ensi vuoden Habitare-paikasta ovat alkaneet - en ole ihan tyytyväinen minulle tarjottuun osastoon, joten asiasta vielä neuvotellaan;
Tiedustelen eräästä kirjankansiprojektista, jonka olen luvannut tänä vuonna tehdä;

---

One cup of coffee, and another one, and so the morning and early afternoon go by fast reading and replying to emails. Starting point: 76 messages to read and react. I wish that I could manage about half of them. Luckily not all of them are not so time consuming, and some of them I've received in two or three times, so I can toss some to trash without doing anything.

I've received an exhibition invitation (more about this one after writing contract, but it's not a traditional gallery space anyway). I reply and receive more information. I print some papers and make some notes, and leave it to be for a while.

There's also another exhibition coming up: next year an exhibition opens in Serlachius museum where my Copper Rust Herb Garden will be included. I thought that I could reply the exhibition architect fast about the size and requirements of my artwork, but thinking the whole process throughout and making a new draft of design takes time. At two I finally realise that I haven't eaten anything during the day, just drank coffee, and right after sending the message I'll have my lunch break. (Some thai cooking, minced meat with tomatos, noodless, a lot of dried chilli and fresh coriander; I watch Netflix for a while and continue with my natural dye freetime project for a while.)

After lunch I try to familiarize myself with the materials I received from some Finnish copyright organisations. I joined Sanasto (writers) last week, and received some printed material which I read through. I also went and registered myself to Kopiosto (pictures).

I update Hanna Holma's interview to Plankko page and make also some other publicity / media work for Plankko artists.

(Other small bits and bobs:
Converting Society6 payments from dollars to euros, and printing receipts to my bookkeeping;
I try to go and make some important system changes for my accountant, but that doesn't just work out - I need to continue with this later;
I start the negotiations about next year's Habitare booth;
I ask about one book cover project that I've promised to make this fall;
I sent a bit annoying email to one person about one press release - I'm always meticulous about some word choices and can't really stand when people use words without thinking what they actually mean, and how significant they can be in communication - and then I feel myself as a too pedantic fussy.)

When time gets closer to four I start to get annoyed. For a few hours already I have watched the beautiful sunlight outside, but I have to wait inside, while waiting DHL delivery to come. I thought it would come before lunch time, but here I am still waiting, and there would be just a beautiful dark clouds + sun shine + colourful foliage combo outside, that I have been waiting for weeks. I try to take some photos through an open window, but the photos looks just like they were taken from the window. At five I finally receive a message that my delivery is arriving before the end of the day, and finally it arrives at seven.

I'm a bit vexed about waiting, and about the fact, that I didn't have time to do anything creative during the day. That about the fact that there are still 70 messages waiting in my email, even though I received just about a dozen new ones. I just worry that the things are starting to pile again - but still I decide to act sensibly and give up work for today. I need to get out, even if it's just a walk to a shop to get more light bulbs to this darkening apartment. (I still fetch my notebook and pigment ink pen and place them next to couch, in case I'll draw something later while watching telly.)

Terveisiä lomakelandiasta / Greetings from the Form-Land

---

January ended and February started with flu. I'm not in fever anymore, but still this week is dedicated for very little chores. My well organized calendar, aiming for avoiding over-working, has just lost this fight: my stomach almost hurts, when I read the to-do list of following weeks - things that I haven't been able to do during these weeks. Not so big projects, but too many of them for the time in use. (How did this happen again?)

Still I'm quite in a good mood, since I have managed to do even something. On Sunday - still being very sick - I was able to fill out the sign-in form to the sales event of the Finnish Print Makers, Teos 2018 (in Kaapelitehdas in Helsinki from February 22 to March 4, 2018), though I'm not completely sure if I marked any of the artwork info correctly (I haven't been able to visit studio for almost three weeks and it is there, where all the necessary info is). Yesterday I filled the grant application for a local culture found, which came out quite good, considering that I wrote it with o-n-e-l-e-t-t-e-r-i-n-t-i-m-e. I was so happy I had made proper pdf-sheets for my projects earlier, and I didn't have to start making all the attachments yesterday. Though, my happiness about managing to send this application was a bit diminished, when I got the negative verdict of one Taike grant. (But what the hell: apparently I had applied the grant from a wrong place! I have to be more careful later!)

I wish that I could get to my studio at the start of the next week. I'd like to check out the Teos 2018 artwork info and pack them for transport, and also I'm already waiting to get to start my new artworks.

But there are still a few days left this week, and I'll spent them with my colour work. This grant funded working time is too short to give it for flu.
