Avauduin aamulla FB:ssä: Viime hetken editoinnin epätoivoa. Aamulla kuolemanväsyneenä ryömin kolostani koneen ääreen viimeistelemään editointia, joka oli yöllä pakko jättää kesken, kun ei vaan päässä enää liikkunut mikään. Eikä liikkunut aamullakaan. Tässä jonkin aikaa sitten yritin raahata materiaalia vaikka tavoin aikajanalle, mutta ei. Mietin jo epätoivoissani, että miten tästä asiasta voi kysyä edes millään Premiere-vertaistukipalstalla, kun ei tule edes mitään virheilmoitusta, jonka voisi antaa johtolangaksi. Sitten tajusin, että mikään muukaan ei koneella toiminut: yritin painella vaikka mitä nappeja - ei mitään reaktiota ohjelmassa. Kunnes sitten koitti hämmentyneen ylevä hetki, jolloin ymmärsin, että pöytäkoneessani ei ole kosketusnäyttöä. Hiiren käyttö auttoi kummasti asiaan. Oh, tämä mobiilielämän aikakausi.

Nyt videot on - pitkän ja monimutkaisen prosessin jälkeen (ihan oma tarinansa) - DVD-levyillä ja varmuuskopioin niitä parhaillani ulkoiselle kovalevylle, jonka otan läppärin kera mukaan. Projekti on alkanut kauan aikaa sitten ja tein Verba-trilogian kaksi tänä vuonna valmistunutta videotakin perinteiseen 720x576 px -kokoon, eli ei mistään teräväpiirrosta puhuta. Tätä näyttelyä ajatellen sillä ei ole merkitystä, koska en onnistunut haalimaan kasaan keskenään samanlaisia mediasoittimia, jotka olisivat pyörittäneet materiaalini ja mihin minulla olisi ollut varaa (tämä oli saamastani apurahasta huolimatta haastava projekti!) Toisaalta: myöskään tulevaisuudessa pitänee noissa flash-animaatioissani pysytellä varsin pienissä pikseleissä: jo tämä koko, noin viiden minuutin pituisilla pikkuvideoilla, oli jo aika kitkuttavaa tekemistä. Tai ei tekemisen vaiheessa varsinaisesti, mutta elokuvamuodossa movina ulos vietäessä. Mieluummin jatkossakin pientä ja sulavaa kuin suurta ja nykivää. (Animaatiorunoni ovat tauotonta ryöppyä, niitä ei voi myöskään tehdä ainakaan tässä muodossaan useammassa pienessä erässä, jotka sitten editoisi Premieressä - kun ei ole kohtaa, josta voisi katkaista).
Tuo mediasoittimen hankkimisprosessi oli melkoisen koominen sessio ja kolmen aktiivipäivän jälkeen tajusin onneksi jättää sikseen, muuten en varmaan olisi ehtinyt saamaan projektia edes valmiiksi. Tutut suosittelivat jos minkälaisia kolmenkympin soittimia, mutta kun tutkin tarkemmin, a) niitä ei enää ollut joko saatavilla, tai b) kun tutkin kommentteja ja käyttökokemuksia, kävi aika pian ilmi, että tällaiseen näyttelykäyttöön niitä oli edes turha miettiä. Onneksi muistui mieleeni Live Herringin vuoden 2011 tapahtumaan hankitut dvd-soittimet - joten ei muuta kuin materiaali dvd:lle ja that's it. Tosin, koskaanhan mikään ei ole niin yksinkertaista: olin unohtanut näiden editoimattomien vuosien aikana, että toistimet, televisiot ja/tai tykit nappaavat PAL-kuvan pinnasta ihan ison prosentin, ja runoistani rajautui aika turhauttavan suuri määrä pois. Otti useamman hetken itkien, riipien, miettien pää höyryten ja nettiä läpi selaten, ennenkuin muistin, että kannattaa pakottaa 720x576 PAL widescreen-formaattiin: ylhäältä ja alhaalta varmaan häviää pari pikseliä, mutta se ei ole niin tuhoavaa kuin 10% häviäminen sivuilta - ja mustat palkit saa kyllä peittoon pahvilla vanhaan malliin. Tämän oivalluksen tehtyäni suurin stressi petollisesti hävisi, vaikka varmaan vielä pahin on edessä ripustusvaiheessa.
Itselleni näissä Verba-trilogian videorunoissa se kaikkein tärkein on sisältö, siksi tuntuu oudolta puhua niistä niin tekniikkakeskittyneesti. Tosiasia kuitenkin on, että tekniikka pitää saada kuntoon, jotta sisältö ja se olennaisin näyttää siltä kuin pitäisikin ja tulee esiin niinkuin on tarkoitus. Vaikeinta videohommissa on aina löytää se keino, millä yhdistää omat resurssinsa omiin vaatimuksiinsa. Epätoivoisimmalla säätöhetkellä olin jo luovuttaa ja ajattelin, että eihän se haittaa, jos osa leveydestä rajautuu pois - mutta kun nyt katsoin teoksia uudelleen, oikein hävetti, että sellainen ajatus oli edes käynyt mielessäni. Visuaalisesti rakennetuissa runoissa kuvan tasapainollakin on merkitys ja vaikka näyttelytilanteessa satunnainen galleriavieras ei olisikaan huomannut kuvan rajautumista ollenkaan, lopputulos ei olisi ollut sitä, minkä halusin näkyville.
Mikä lohdullinen hetki löytyikään tästä päivästä, kun lopulta istuin aamupäivällä työtilan lattialla kuuma kahvikuppi kädessäni, kun projektori tikitti pinnatuolilla kuvaa seinään raivattuun tyhjään kohtaan, ja kun vihdoin pystyin toteamaan itselleni, että ehkä saan sittenkin esille sen, mitä ajattelin.

This morning I FBd: The last minute editing despair. This morning I was dead tired when I tried to continue the editing process, which I had to leave last night after my brain stopped working. And my brain didn't work this morning either. I tried to drag and drop some editing material to timeline in editing program, but nothing happened. I was desperate: how could I even ask anything in any Premiere support page, when I don't even get any error messages or such to give as a clue. Then I realized, that nothing else was working too: I tried to push all the buttons, but no reaction at all. Until the moment of sublime astonishment, when I finally understood that there's no touch screen on my table computer. Using mouse did help in mysterious way... (This mobile age...)

The videos are - after long and complicated process (which is a whole different story) - saved as DVDs and at the moment I'm making backups, which I will take with me in case of... The project has started a long time ago, so I made the two videos of Verba trilogy in same format as the one before, to 720x576 px size - so not any high definition video. In this exhibition that doesn't really matter in any way, because I couldn't get enough identical media players which would have played my material and which I could have afforded (this was actually really challenging, even though I have a grant for this exhibition and more financial resources to use than normally!) On the other hand: I think I have to use quite small resolution in my future flash animations too: even in this small size making five minute videos was quite slow. Not necessary in the process of making but exporting movs was using everything my computer could give. So, rather small and smooth than big and bulky in future too. (My animated poeams are non stop flood of words, I can't make several small flash animations and then combine them in Premiere - I simply don't have any scene I could cut the animation).
The process of getting the media player was quite a comical session and after three active days I realized that it would be better to leave the whole thing, otherways I wouldn't have time to finish the whole process. My friends recommended me all kinds of thirty euro players, but when I took closer look at the players, a) they were not available anymore, or b) when I read comments and user experiences I quite fast realized that these wouldn't help me in my exhibition use. I was glad to remember the dvd players that we bought for the Live Herring 2011 event - so I planned to burn the material on dvds, and that's that. Of course, nothing ever is as simple: during these un-editing years I had forgotten the fact that most players, tvs and/or projectors cut several percentages of PAL videos, and too much of my poems was cropped out in this process. It took several big moments when I was crying, thinking my head off and browsing the internet like a madman, before I remembered that I should force the 720x576 pixel film to PAL widescreen: some pixels are cutted from the top and from the bottom, but it's not as destructive as missing 10% from the sides - and the black bars can be blocked with cardboard like in old days... After this realization the biggest stress vanished, although the biggest problems are probably ahead at the stage of setting up the exhibition.
For myself the most important thing with these Verba trilogt videos is of course the content, that's why it feels so strange to write about them so technology centered words. Still the fact is, that the techbology must work, so the content and the most essential of all will be delivered as it should be. The most difficult thing with these videoworks is to find the means to combine the resources in use to my own requirements. At the most desperate moment of endless seeming tuning I was quite ready to give up and I thought that it wouldn't really matter, if some of the content width is cropped out - but now, when I rewatched the videos, I'm ashamed of my thoughts. When the poems are built visually, the balance of the words and of images means everything, and although the random exhibition guest would propably paid no attention to the cropping of the image, the result just wouldn't be the same I wanted to exhibit.
What a comforting moment I found in mids of this day, when I finally sat down in forenoon, with a hot coffee cup on my hand, when the projector sitting in a wooden kitchen chair reflected the image to the emptied wall space, and when I finally could state to myself that I propably could deliver what I would like to.
