Uusi alku // New Beginning

Uutuuden tunteen kuorrutti konkretialla eilen uudessa pakkauksessaan saapunut uusi printteri, rikkinäisen tilalle.

In a relatively short time there have been many things in my life, that I have had to think over. It has been an overwhelming brain excercise to get myself to move at least to some direction, instead of just waiting still for something to happen. Now the waves have turned smaller and I can vaguely see the horizon - which gives me some power to choose if I turn my wheel to starboard or to port. The scale of the questions whirling in my head is much smaller and things are somewhat understandable. Or if not yet fully understandable, at least I know that they are within the reach of my comprehension, if I just try a bit.

This week has been a new start in many senses. The frosting on that feeling came from the brand new printer which arrived yesterday to replace the broken one. There are new stuff waiting on my shelves: papers for different purposes, new pigment ink pens, yet unopened paint tubes and pigments, yet not sharpened pencils - and as a cherry to this all: a few minutes ago I smelled the aroma of the freshly opened china ink bottle.

And I sort of sence that there just might be a few new thoughts hiding in my head, too.

Easy Living...

---

The end of last week was quite pleasant - I spent my time partly at the Jyväskylä Artists Society art sale event at the art museum and partly at home doing my own work - and walking the sunny road between the art museum and home. Three of my works found a new home from the art sale, and those days spent at the museum were filled with meeting new people - I'm feeling great! At home, besides doing the have-to-do kind of jobs, I've also done some writing and drawing, and crotcheting potholders while watching Sleepy Hollow series. There has been some kind of easygoing feeling - no hurry, no terrifying deadlines - during last days, and I start to feel that it's nice to do something again. Anything.

Onneksi olkoon! - eiku ei sittenkään // Congrats! - not!

Ihmisiä saaressa - People on Island
2014, pigmenttimustevedos / pigment ink print, 28x28cm+marg. 190e (without frame)

Kotiinpaluu.

Ps. Vien tämän Highlight-teoksen kehystettynä Jyväskylän taiteilijaseuran teosvälitystilaisuuteen. Teosvälitystilaisuus on avoinna Jyväskylän taidemuseolla keskiviikosta sunnuntaihin 16.-20.9.

Returning home. From beautiful summer to beautiful autumn. It's not even too freezing yet. And not dark yet, either. But still the everyday life with all the paperwork & stuff attacked me without warning, before I could get myself into defensive position. I promised myself to have enough time for writing and other creative stuff, and I meant to have last week off (at least from all that paper stuff) and return to my desk today, but somehow all days have just vanished, doing something not inspiring but mandatory. A few hours for creative work isn't enough to get to a good mode, and that kind of short time turns easily into checking the time every five minutes - if there is still some left. On Friday evening I updated my long to do list with the stuff I just have to get over with before I can concentrate on my creative work again, and I was feeling quite low with this, just when a very uplifting email message arrived: there is a Highlights by Rui Prata slide show in Art Fair Suomi 15 event running on the stage between programme. (Rui Prata (1955, Portugal) is the founder and artistic director of Encontros da Imagem photo festival (1987- 2012) and director of Image Museum (Braga, Portugal / 1999-2014).)

But wait a minute! I'm not taking part to the Art Fair Suomi 15 at all. (I mentioned this already in my posting last July - only one work was selected from me, and shipping one work about 350 kms was just not economically sensible in any way, so I had to cancel the whole thing from my part. I really would have liked to take part to the event, but if I take some work to any sales event, of course I wish to sell artworks more than to just cut the shipping costs, and even if there is always a possibility to go to minus with shipping costs when the works are not selling, I wouldn't want to take part if the default iis, that there's not even a possibility to gain any profit. Or if the possible profit would be so small, that I could compare it for exchanging the framed print to just a few pizzas that I could buy with the profit. Ultimately, I still have an ambition to really live with my art.)

Mainly I have been regretting my own reaction to this glad message: I was throughout too fast and honest, and replied - rightaway - that the work selected is not at the event (however, I would be so happy, if my work still could be presented in Highlights reel), and a reply to this was of couse, that because Highlights is a selection of the works at the Art Fair, my work will be deleted from the list. And now I've been playing the 'what if...' game in my head. What if I just had not replied to that email - maybe my artwork would be there in the photo reel, and nobody had even found out that it's not at the event at all... Because, frankly, I'm really bummed about missing this whole thing. (Even though leaving out the event was the only economically sensible thing - a fact that I have to get in my head.)

I'm flattered and feeling sweet about the original Highlights selection, though. There weren't too many artworks with that honour. Still I feel a bit weird. When I was about ten, I saw a dream, that has been tattooed in my mind: in that dream I won a shopping cart full of candy, but after I had filled the cart, it was taken from me to the shop window, where it stayed. Then, when I woke up, I felt quite same way as I do now.

ps. I'll take this Highlight chosen artwork to the Jyväskylä Artists' Society art sale at the Jyväskylä art museum this week, from Wednesday 16 to Sunday 20 (Wed-Sat 11-18, Sun 11-16). I'm at the event on Wednesday and Saturday, after noon, but maybe also some other days! Feel free to share the FB event and invite more people to join!

Plankkon kuukauden teos // The Plankko Artwork of the Month

Päivi Hintsanen: Arriving. 2015, pigmenttimustevedos, n. 14x8cm +marg., ei myytävänä
- Päivi Hintsanen: Arriving. 2015, pigment ink print, ~ 14x8cm +marg., not for sale (horce commerce) -

Vedokseni Arriving on Plankkon syyskuun teos. Tarinointini teoksen synnystä on julkaistu Plankkon sivuilla, josta jutun voi käydä lukemassa suomeksi.

---

My print Arriving is now a Plankko artwork of the month. I've written some background of the work - how the print was born - and the story is published in Plankko website. As the site is in Finnish only, here's a rough translate of the text:

In my Random Prints project I'll make one print of edition of 90 at one time, and leave the prints in envelopes, accompanied with a letter, for random people to find. The letter contains some information of the project and a request to tell about where the print has travelled with its new owner. I've now executed this project for five times and each time it has become more important for me: I started the project as some kind of game, but now it is so much more than I never would have guessed. After the fourth time (in Germany 2014) I wrote about it in my blog, and as I said in my website some time ago, since then the same feeling has just grown.

In 2015 it was time for the fifth Random Prints. The picture is called Arriving, and its' way to the paper was a long and bumpy one. I made a first sketch already in 2012 and it was then meant to be a Random Prints image of the same year, but somehow the project just didn't find any wings. The first version was a little bit different: the cups were more like coffee or teacups with their handles and the horizon in-between the sea and the sky was more clearer and everything was much more detailed. The process slowy turned to be really heavy and as the days went by, the picture started to feel a bit strange and unfamiliar. I didn't get the picture to work as I wished and it didn't change to the picture I would have liked, and the whole theme felt too used and the picture itself too picturesque. Too big for a small picture. Too small for a small picture. I didn't know what was wrong and why the picture just wouldn't turn out what I wanted.

After some time I tried again: I edited some details, changed colours, made this, made that, but somehow it was impossible for me to see anything else on the paper, than the riginal detailed picture. I gave up. I didn't get rid of the cups then, but that year my Random Prints picture came up to be One Cup of Fresh Sea-Water, in which some sea birds flew upon a red cup of sea-water. I didn't think that I would return to this picture, that I felt was too "pretty", and I didn't give it another look during the next Random Prints project round, few years later.

This year it was just pure luck, that Arriving came to be a Random Prints image. If everything had gone the way I had planned, the picture would have been another one. This year's project planning started wonderfully: I received the papers in courtesy of Hahnemühle and this lifted my spirits up and I had so many ideas that they didn't almost fit into my head. There are still dozens of notes at my desk, filled with ideas, and as I was so pumped with energy, I started working with several of them. Then, suddenly, a couple of unlucky happenings cut my working for a while, and when I could return to my work, my printer broke down. Suddenly it was unsure if I could have anything printed. Luckily the problem was solved under one week, and I got to make my prints at the Jyväskylä Print Making Centre, at the studio of the Centre for Creative Photography.

At that point I didn't have a lot of time. I was leaving the country in just a few day and there was so little time to make the prints, that I was horrified about it. I knew that I simply didn't have time enough to make several print proofs and then adjust colours and fix the details, so I took all the seven small pictures I had made this year. There was still a space for an eight one in a paper sheet, and because I didn't want to waste any paper, the Arriving found its way to one and only proof printing. When I took the first glance at the proof paper, I noticed rightaway, that all the pictures I made this year would have needed still a bit more work, some colour adjusting at minimum. But there was one picture amongst all others, that looked good as it. All the features that I disliked earlier had somehow vanished during these couple of years, when the picture had been left in my "drawer". I still think that the picture itself is a bit naive and maybe the subject isn't very original, but still it looks like something I have made, which I didn't felt at all a few years back. Different than I usually do, but sitll. And I now see something in it, that I didn't see when I was making it.

When I signed and numbered the prints and put them into their envelopes, I felt that I had made the right choice.

Kirkkoja, kaupunkia ja kukkia // Churches, city and flora

I'm one of those people, who usually notes architecture around when there's something wrong with it. I feel extremely uncomfortable in grey concrete suburbs (although I really like concrete surface in smaller things) or in those ugly tiled buildings of the 80s. Sometimes, very rarely, something in architecture stops me in a positive way to think the beauty of the building. But here in Florence it happens a lot. I don't know if it tells something about Finnish architecture or more about the fact that I have an old fashioned mind and I feel home when I'm amongst older buildings. If I put it simply: I just find the style and proportions of the renessaince architecture very pleasuring, as well as the materials - heavy stone and plastered surfaces. They have some kind of permanence and comfort in them, which is hard to put into words. When I'm travelling, I only seldom go and visit some building for its visual architecture (often I go to visit a building because of its "sound scene" though - that's one point of architecture, too), but Santo Spirito church by Brunelleschi is one of those buildings that I need to get close by in every trip to Florence. There is something very calming and balancing at the piazza in front of the church and on the facade of the church itself. (I've visited inside earlier, but I can't remember anything about it - maybe it's the outside of the building this time, that has made more permanent impact for me.)

Mies pitää Duomoa pystyssä // A man keeps Duomo from falling apart

The best friend of the Italian renessaince architecture is without doubt this unbelievable light and its shadows and reflections. I'm guessing, that if these beautiful renaissance buildings would be transported somewhere where I live in Central Finland, the topmost layers of the magic would disappear, just like that. In Finland the light simply works in different ways - when there is some. It has its own magic, surely, and the northern light probably changes in different seasons mpre than in anywhere else, but in an average day, if the exceptional weather phenomenon hasn't taken hold of the sky, it doesn't have that dramatic dimension, which you can find here in Italy. In Italy the light is vibrant drama, in Finland its more subdued lyric. (Perhaps is around this time, during the long shadows of the first weeks of autumn, when its closer to the southern light - but it's so, so short time.)

Giardino dei Semplici on "Kyynelpuun taimi" -teokseni alkukoti.

Botanical gardens are my favourite places. I'm not really a "flower person" in any way: I don't know plants with the exception of the plants used for dyeing (of which I don't probably identify the most when seen in nature, even though I know their latin names quite well), and there are no plants at my home, except some gift flowers now and then. But who doesn't like flower pictures - and taking photos of flowers? It's somehow so rewarding when you really can't take ugly photos, even though your skills in taking photos would be almost nonexistent, and if you would use only the basic, automatic pocket camera. I'm more interested on the other elements of the plants than the flowering flowers, though: there's something extremely insiring in the textures and shapes of the plants, oths of those small earth-licking and big treelike ones. What makes the Florence botanical garden (Giardino dei Semplici) the perfect place for taking photos and just enjoy the surroundings, is the specifically the light: how it comes down to the garden in between the branches of the trees, and how it pushes itself inside some of the bigger plant houses through the windows.

Giardino dei Semplici is the original home of my "The Seedling of the Tree of Tears" work. It was here, where the idea was first born, and where I took several photographs on several occasions to be used as the basis of the work. Also this time I went to take photographs of the same spaces, in the same light, wishing that maybe with these new photos around I could finally finish the two other pictures of the series. The battery of my camera gave in a little too early, but there's time to do it again.

Visiting botanical garden is always as much of work as it is freetime for me, a way to clear my head. When it's too hot outside there's nothing better to do in the city, than to sit at a cool stone bench at the shadow of the blossoming tree and listen how the plants are whisperin in a slight wind, when the other voices of the city fade somewhere background.

Sinisen taiassa // In Blue Magic

Kirjoitin näyttelystä jutun Coloria-blogiini ja lisää voi lukea New York Timesin jutusta Lapis Lazuli and the History of ‘the Most Perfect’ Color (Roderick Conway Morris, 18.8.2015)

Sometimes I thank my luck of being in the right place at the right time. I knew beforehand of the Lapislazzuli - Magia del Blu exhibition at Museo degli Argenti in Florence, but when I learned about the exhibition, I was already coming to Florence any way. I didn't actually try to find out anything about the exhibition beforehand, because it was obvious that if there would be something colour related exhibited here, of course I would go. Because I wasn't really "prepared" myself for the exhibition, it's size overwhelmed me a bit: physically it was quite what I was expecting (four big rooms), but contentwise it was much more larger than I ever could have imagined, even if I had read more closely about the exhibition beforehand. The exhibition showed quite all that can be exhibited about lapis lazuli stone and the ultramarine pigment made of it. Of course there are still some stories that didn't make the exhibition room, but there was enough and more to learn.

I wrote a small piece of the exhibition in my Coloria blog - but unfortunately it is in Finnish only. But, New York Times just happened to publish an article about the exhibition a few days ago: Lapis Lazuli and the History of ‘the Most Perfect’ Color (Roderick Conway Morris, August 18, 2015)

Sunnuntain rauhaa // Peaceful Sunday

Finnish artist Päivi Hintsanen is on a mission to uplift Florence with pretty prints and positive messages. Keep your eyes peeled! http://theflr.net/jbps2x

Kahvimmalle.

Vaikka kirjoittaminen onkin vienyt kynää, kyllä kuvatkin elävät täällä, ainakin jotenkin - muistivihkossa on monta uutta kuvan siementä, epämääräisiä viivoja ja muistiinpanoja, jotka toivottavasti sitten myöhemmin talven pimeydessä saan kasvatettua täyskasvuisiksi.

I'm finding myself writing again, instead of drawing and working with pictures. Five years ago in Florence, I started to write a novel, which, afterwards, I have written only when I'm here - the last time was three years ago. The storyline doesn't have anything to do with Florence, or with Italy, or in any way with anything relating to this place, really, but something just brings it alive in here. Maybe it's because when I'm at home I must always concentrate on some other things, not writing. Writing demands these quiet Sundays, and quiet other days too, when all the Duties and Things-To-Dos don't make noise behind the door.

And writing demands warm weather and cold water; and those stone pavements where you can sit any moment to write something to your notebook; narrow streets, in which your thoughts can fly freely; mazes of those tiny alleys, in which you can imagine a life about half a thousand years ago; a possibility to just wander around aimlessy and without hurry. And coffee, which tastes here different. More coffeish.

Although it has been writing that has taken over my pen, the pictures are alive too, somehow - there are many small seeds of pictures in my notebook, unclear lines and notes, which hopefully I will bring up to be full-grown ones, then later, in the darkness of the winter.

My Sunday was made by an article aout Random Prints project in a local newspaper written in English, The Florentine. The link you can find above, and if it doesn't work, a direct link to article written by Mary Gray is here: http://theflorentine.net/articles/article-view.asp?issuetocId=10230.

Hyviä hetkiä // Good Moments

Posted by Hahnemühle on 20. elokuuta 2015

Now, as I'm in Florence, sitting next to the window in kitchen, with an emptied coffee mug and a glass of cold sprinkling water next to me on the table, I've learned to somehow appreciate the stream of continuous misfortunes earlier this year. When the problems were current, I wasn't really laughing, and still a few weeks back I felt, that if yet one thing goes wrong, I simply run out of battery - but now, when the problems (that could be solved) have been solved, and most of them worked out well, nearly all of that strength-eating misery has metamorphosed itself to be a booster to my good mood right now. There are moments when I wish that my life could be a bit more even, and the rises and fallings to be bit smaller, but at this moment I just wouldn't change my existing state of mind to anything else. Next time when the problems are pouring in, I just should rely on the fact, that there will be some opposite moments too. And I should try to remember this: how good they feel precisely after those low moments. And of which one with the luthering mindset can enjoy too, because they feel like earned.

I recognise the same mechanism, from the exhaustion to the relief, in almost every project I made this year, starting with the exhibitions. At this moment the most current is my Random Prints project, which was a quite demanding process in all its states, and to which I totally lost my faith a few weeks back, when there was at least one new problem each day, not solved by snapping fingers. As I was tired and with other stuff pressing me down and eating my mind, I felt almost giving up, more than once. I'm glad I didn't, since today the project has started blooming. In a few days time I've left about ten prints around in their envelopes, for random people to find, and this morning I received the first whereabouts of one print. The morning peaked as Hahnemühle posted Random Prints video they made.

In this happy flow my mind is filling with new thoughts and ideas. One guy once asked me if creative people can take holidays at all, to which I replied, that I don't think so - there's no way to turn your brains off. Now I'm thinking, that maybe the holidays is just this: no the boring or mandatory part of the work around, just the obsticle free flow for thoughts and enthusiasm, which is resulted by having new ideas.

Valmistelua // Preparing

(Tämän vuoden Random Prints -kuva on Arriving, jonka synnystä kertonen enemmän myöhemmin.

A great play of exhausting suspension ended last Tuesday evening, when two things, that had been stressing my mind, finally got a solution somehow, and both in a positive way. Another of them was the execution of my Random Prints project this year. With the help of Tiina E. I got all my images printed, and also I got finishes for a couple of other series of small prints, which have been waiting for a better time to come. Then, when I was walking home after nine pm. at the darkening, warm summer night, I was thinking that not even the bag full of prints didn't weigh anything (even though paper is always heavier that you may think). At night I sat on my balcony doorway, listened to light rain dropping and I was thinking, that during this continuing state of stress that has been going on for the past few months, I almost lost my ability to enjoy those little, silent moments, when there is something Great Smallness in the midst of the everyday life of the world. Like that rare warm and dark August night, when your worries have vanished for a moment, and the moths and swifts are shining under the street lamp lights.

(This year's Random Prints picture is titled Arriving, of which I will write more later. Surely I'll upload the picture soon to this blog also, but if someone would like to view the picture rightaway, take a look at Random Prints Facebook page or blog to view both picture and extra info.)

Hattivattien syy // Hattifatteners' fault

Viime viikolla tapahtui montakin ikävää asiaa, joista viimeisimpänä (vaikkakaan ei suurimpana) torstaina hajonnut printterini. Olin juuri tekemässä uusia kuvia asiakkaalle, joka oli tulossa tapaamaan seuraavana päivänä - tekemättä jäi. Seuraavaksi listalla oli tämän vuoden Random Prints -projektini, jonka pariin pääsemistä olen odottanut kuin kuuta nousevaa. Torstai-ilta kului paniikissa, perjantai puolestaan sen seikan hiljaisessa hyväksymisessä, etten ehdi tehdä mitään printterilleni ajoissa. Onneksi en ihan heti törmännyt tiiliseinään, toinenkin mahdollisuus on. Kohta olen menossa Ratamon Digilabiin kokeilemaan, onnistuisiko sarjan tekeminen siellä. Tällä tuurilla ja rajatulla toiminta-ajalla en uskalla oikein toivoa mitään. Joten jännittää saa vielä pari tuntia.

Last week many unhappy things happened, the latest (but not the biggest) of them being my printer braking down on last Thursday. I was just about to print new miniprints for a client, who came to meet me the next day - wasn't able to do it. The next printing project on the list was my Random Prints project, which I have anxiously waited to start. I was panicking the whole Thursday evening, on Friday I somehow accepted the fact, that my printer problem cannot be fixed early enough. I was lucky not to burst straight to the brick wall, there is still another possibility to print. Soon I'll be heading to Ratamo Digilab to test, if I could print the series there. With this luck and the exhausting time limit I really can't hope much. So, I'll have to just try to keep my fingers crossed still a few hours.

Perjantai // Friday

Adoben CS6 Design Premium on jo asennettu, tällä hetkellä Premiere asentuu. Jo väsyttää ja mieli halajaa mansikoiden ja jäätelön pariin. Taitaa mennä yösyömiseksi.

First time this summer I heard the thunder today. I've heard some noise before, maybe, but because the thunder has been so far away, I've not been sure if the sound has came from it or from our upstairs neighbours (they probably have a bowling alley up there), or from the Ruusupuisto parking lot where there has been a worksite the whole summer. Maybe because of the thunder my head has been squished by the unvisible band around my head the whole day and everything has happened painfully slow and embarassingly sweaty.

Yesterday I received a message that the inks I ordered have arrived (or at least some of them), but it was still early today when I realised that there's no chance to pick them up today. I should have used the whole morning and noon to finish the miniprint illustrations in making, but somehow I just didn't have the flow and I ended up answering to some people who have asked things about colour and have already waited reply for several days. I also replied to some important emails and agreed about some appointments for the next week. Some clients would like to come and see prints and I agreed to meet them at Timo's studio, where my print storage is. (And maybe I finally got to open those exhibition parcels - artworks that were exhibited in Vaasa have been in their package for almost a month now.)

I tried to draw still for a couple of hours, but then I had to leave for running business.... Because I don't have a car, I have to organise things in a way that I can manage to do as much in one day as I have a chauffeur available (usually my dad), which ofcourse isn't necessarily a bad thing. One learns how to organise and boost one's activities when one doesn't have so much choices. But of course, if I had just THOUGHT a little bit, I had waited until the Neste Rally event would be just a memory. At the city the streets were packed with cars and people, no fun.

When we left home, I already had so much stuff (a lot of them going to my parents' house), so I was a bit nervous if everything from the frame shop and the exhibition works from Uusikaupunki which were picked from Matkahuolto (shipping company) would fit in the car, but it wen't quite well. Only the frame shop gig was not as fluent as normally: there was some kind of street party and we couldn't get car to the frame shop yard. Luckily there weren't so much framed works and it wasn't raining at that time, so we could get the works to the car relatively easily. But still I was a bit bummed: it's not nice for the framer that his clients can't make it to the shop. We took everything to Tourula to Timo's studio, where I placed the framed works in some corner and emptied the unframed prints from the Uusikaupunki parcels. Then I took the framed works back to car and we headed towards Gallery Becker / Jyväskylä Artists' Society' s Artotheque.

I was planning to make a postcard inventory of the cards in gallery, but before getting to the gallery I already realised that it's not possible in this time frame - I just stuffed the new postcards (of lighthouses, blue berries and lingon berries) to my card rack and I will make the inventory some other day. The summer gallerist Susanna helped me to get down the works from my Artist of the Month wall. I covered those works with plastic wrap and put cardboards to cover the hooks back, so they won't harm any other framed pictures. It was all I managed to do before five. I didn't have any time to unpack the works I brought to gallery, but Susanna promised to do the job during the weekend.

From Becker I walked to the center, visited a grocery store, came home by bus and started to install my new second laptop, which I had bought already last Wednesday but to which I haven't had time to touch earlier. That is what I'm still doung. Adobe CS6 Design Premium is already installed, and currently Premiere is installing. I'm so tired already and I so wish I could go and eat some ice cream with strawberries. I think I might have some night snack ahead.

Torstai // Thursday

---

This day is described very shortly: this morning I checked out the postcard delivery I received yesterday, and after that I've been drawing the whole day. My hand is getting stiff, but I'll just have to continue just a little bit more since I'm a bit behing with schedule. Tomorrow I'll have such a mindless amount of work, that I still have to white a detailed to-do-list to get it all done.

Keskiviikko // Wednesday

Päivä alkoi harmituksella. Dyes in History and Archaeology 21 -kirja oli loppunut välittäjältä, en saanutkaan tilattua sitä.

Viime viikolla tilaamani kortit tulivat.

---

Today started annoyingly. The 'Dyes in History and Archaeology 21' journal was not available anymore, so I couldn't order it. I sort of anticipated this, because I've been trying to find this publication for several years time, but I have never seen it available anywhere. At least for a reasonable price - £80-90 is a bit too much for my walllet. Maybe it's good this way, because when I went to pay my work insurance fees and the exhibition packaking fee, now it probably echoes in my account.

It's a bit annoying day in anyways too: it's rainy and dark, which limits my work a little bit. I have a natural white light fluorescent lamp but it's not installed yet, so there's just not enough light for printing projects. Maybe I shouldn't be so neurotic about my printing colours, but I just can't help myself. Nonetheless I made a few prints with earlier settings that I know I can trust.

Yesterday I took some of my works to the frame shop, which were meant to be sent to Art Fair Finland 2015, but today I heard that only one work from myself is chosen to be included. Shipping one small work to Helsinki from Jyväskylä is not financially wise at any point (besides sending only one work is a let down itself), so I just informed that I'm backing off the whole event this year. Framing itself won't be wasted - I just leave the works then to wait for the Jyväskylä Artists' Society art event in September, for example.

The postcards I ordered last week arrived. I ordered the basic cards, but also a small test order of some new postcard pictures (of old artworks) to a new matte paper. I just opened the parcel and checked the new ones, but I should really go through the whole pack later.

Afternoon and the early evening I continued drawing pictures for miniprints. I draw with felt tip point pen to paper, scan the pictures and finish them in Illustrator and Photoshop. Today I've been extra slow with everything I do and my energy levels are exceptionally low, and I'm so behind with this drawing process... I just need to believe, that tomorrow there will be no thunder, because I don't dare to keep my electric equipment on (electric wires on sockets) during lightnings. I just have so big pile of undone things on my desk, that I don't really have time for any extra speed bumps.

Tiistai // Tuesday

Heräsin yhdeksän maissa ja siirryin suoraan työkoneen ääreen aamukahvikuppi kädessäni. Pari tuntia vierähti nopeasti, kun yritin etsiä tarvitsemaani värikirjallisuutta. Etsimääni en löytänyt, muita aihetta sivuavia sen sijaan kyllä ja yhden aarteen (Dyes in History and Archaeology 21), jota olen yrittänyt löytää useamman vuoden.

---

I woke up at nineish, and moved straight to my computer with a coffee cup. A few hours went by fast when I tried to search dome colour themed literary I need. I didn't find what I was looking for, but I did find some other books and one treasure (Dyes in History and Archaeology 21), that I have tried to find for several years. After coffee ended I did some paperwork: I send bills of a few web and graphic design projects that were finished last week.

I packed a few prints for shipping and at the same time I was thinking that I should really make some effort in packaking. If someone orders an expensive print, there should be some quolity in packaking too. All my parcels look like they've been made by a five year old, or even worse, and no matter if I use recycled or completely new materials. Maybe I should make a nice picture stamp which I could use to pattern the paper nicely? Although the first move propably should be to learn to handle adhesive tapes in way that it wouldn't be everywhere and in scrappy lumps.

Before heading off to the centre, I took fast snapshops of my Värikki pendants with my tablet, for resellers, but tablet + dim light = unclear photos - I have to redo the process with a real camera (I didn't mean these pics to be any ad quality product photos, but examples of what it is a question about, but still they could be at least sharp ones...)

It was nice to walk outside, when it was sunny for a change. I took my June notes and other papers to my accountant, and from there I took a walk to the frame shop, where I brought one ordered print and some other prints to be framed for Art Fair Finland 2015 event. The event is in September, and I even don't know if all my works are selected in, but I need to have this done early enough because all the other stuff in August and September. From the frame shop I walked to a post office to ship those parcels that look like someone's unfortunate lunch packages. The official package sticker of the postal services luckicly gives some kind of formality for my shipment, or at least covers a large part of the surface.

That was the end of my working day - I spent the rest of the day enjoying the sunny day. Though, I did some paper work shortly still in the evening, but I don't count it to this, so I can have the illustion of that a seven-hour working day can actually exist.

Maanantai // Monday

I've been participating on a study where I've - among other people who make their living with creative work - have been raporting how my working days go, seven days of one week for four times a year. Today I heard bad news from the writer and I heard that the project has been postponed for now. But I was so prepared to this project, that I decided to write my day raports here, in my blog, for this week.

So, here it goes.

I woke up at ten, crabbed my coffee mug and went straight to my working desk. I started my day with organizing a transport for my exhibition works from the exhibition that ended yesterday at the Runonkulma gallery in Uusikaupunki. Exceptionally I didn't go there myself, but the gallerist will pack the works in boxes and Matkahuolto (a transport company) should pick up the packages on Wednesday or Thursday.

While I was eating breakfast, I also was drawing some new miniprint pictures. I should finish the prints this week, but I'm extra happy that I haven't made any promises on that.

I went to a bank to pay my bills, and at the same time I checked that prints that I have sold lately were paid in time (yes, they all were - my wonderful customers!)

I had a plan to take some prints to the frame shop today, but I didn't get them all signed yesterday, when my hand started cramping and those numbers and editions started to go messy. I first thought about signing the prints to be framed during morning, and then leave to town, but as the rain was pouring, I decided that I would concentrate on signing and numbering of the works (not only the to-be-framed ones) and I'll go to the frame shop tomorrow. The process has taken over seven hours today (in which I had a one hour lunch break though, and I also hanged the laundry to dry amidst the work) and still there are some works unsigned. I will finish the signing process tomorrow.

I packed the prints going to be framed to a water proof package, just in case.

I didn't actually do any creative work today - only the short moment with drawing at breakfast time.

Helminauhasta Helmipuuhun // From String of Pearls to Pearl Tree

One String of Pearls print was ordered as a gift and I promised to take it to be framed on Monday. I didn't have any prints myself, but over half of the edition is still not printed, and so it was with a few other pictures. So, I used the whole Friday and this morning aligning papers and changing inks. Now I'm already in cutting phase, but I wonder why this feels sooooo challenging right now. I have the measurements written down and I have a easy-to-use guillotine paper cutter, but still my head just doesn't het those measurements I've written down. I fear what happens with signing and numbering - especially with the latter one - today, when both thinking and fine motor coordination drivers have vanished from my head. There are other prints waiting for signing and numbering, as well as cutting also, and I really should get all those unfinished projects off my table: move the prints to their cardboard boxes to safe themselves from dust.

In addition to the shortage of my physical and psychical abilities right now, also one finding is messing with my head: last year I made the String of Pearls print, as well as Armful of Stones print to the Höyry galleria exhibition, where there was supposed to be more of new prints from the People on Their Islands series, and I also started a few totally new themes. But, as it always happens to me before exhibitions, there's so much work and those small details filling my brain, that nothing new was really finished. Now, when I was searching my last years materials, I found a few almost-finished prints, that need only a few days works before I can make the first colour tests. But, in addition to that, I also found a Pearl Tree print that I made last year, and which is practically finished. I've taken one colour proof of the series, but I wasn't quite pleased with the colours, and that's why the print wasn't finished - and I have totally, fully, forgot about it, as well as other pearl themed prints that I found in the same box.

I'm wondering, if I could fix the colours of the Pearl Tree print next week and take the first numbered prints. Or the next week. If I do, there is a new dilemma ahead: is it last year's work or this years? What is the year I should mark to the print? There's just so little amount of fine tuning in the shades, that I really consider it to be a finished one, and I can honestly say, that I wouldn't have make this picture this year. But still, the fine tuning is the final process. And really, I think it is always the year when the first numbered print is made.

I will see, if it is this year or will my constant lack of time bring it to be the next year...

Kuvittelua // Imaging and illustrating

No, jospa huomenna tulisi mitä luvataan: auringonpaistetta, tai edes sateeton päivä.

In July, my limits of life have been drawn by my home, with being fluish the whole month, my outdoor life has been mainly standing on the balcony and watching the birds fly by, or just running for little things around the town. But not that normal summer outdoor life: mindless wandering around in beautiful weather and forgetting myself reading in some park bench somewhere. This summer the good feeling hasn't been born out of turning myself off in holiday mood, but in a very Lutheran way of working: I've been visiting post office sending art prints for my clients, I've been collecting paper and ordering more printing inks, I've been at the building equipment flea market searching stuff for my future works and also to the small make-over of our kitchen, which we planned to do this summer, but propably it won't happen, and I've been visiting dentist and other doctors. I've ordered shoes from online shop. And everything else like that. Feels so sad, when my very biggest euphoria comes from getting the print package to the post office dry and also avoiding the rain on my way back home.

I just hope that tomorrow brings what is promised: sun shine, or at least a day without raining. I try to go boldly outside my summer territory, two kilometers from where I live, to visit a craft and art market organized by a local theatre group, Huoneteatteri (FB-event). I'm planning to take very light stuff with me, mostly illustration thingies: badges, my recycled wax crayons, and maybe cards and miniprints. And umbrella, just in case.

Merkki paremmasta // Sign of light ahead

Guess what the mailman brought! My next Random Prints project papers, in courtesy of #Hahnemühle <3 The Random Prints...

Posted by Random prints on 15. heinäkuuta 2015

Not only negative stuff around. In this not very sharp sick July, I've received also several good news, for example a lot of exhibition deals for the next year in Finland (Tampere, Rovaniemi, Hyvinkää, Kotka, Kouvola; more about these later), many requests and orders on my prints, and maybe the most delightful one: the next Random Prints project in August and September will have the papers in courtesy of the German paper maker Hahnemühle. I have drawn several ideas for the next print, maybe some of them will be realized into this paper. I just feel, that new images keep flowing into my head in such an amount, that it is hard to drawn them all. The roulette with the next Random Prints image will be turning for a while still, at least until the next week.
