Kesäkuu on ollut ihan hirveää puurtamista. Sellaista taustahommaa, mikä ei oikein näy missään. Itselle tulee sellainen olo, että ei ole saanut mitään aikaiseksi, vaikka päivät venyvät vähintään kaksitoistatuntisiksi ja joka ilta on niin väsynyt, että meinaa nukahtaa olohuoneen nojatuoliin. Ja nukahtaakin.

Jotain luovaakin: sain ison kuvitustilauksen, joka työllistää koko kesän ja osan syksyäkin. Kivaa hommaa, mutta aiheeltaan ehkä hieman raskaskin - aihe koskettaa henkilökohtaisesti, joten työ on sujunut varsin tunteellisissa merkeissä. Kuvitusprosessi on ollut tavallaan normaalia helpompaa, mutta myös uuvuttavampaa: tunnen olevani kokonaisuudessaan niin syvällä sisällä, että itsensä ravisteleminen takaisin normaalimoodiin työpöydän äärestä on jo melkoinen urakka. Ja käytännössä valmistelen vasta koko projektia!

Kuvitusprojekti on innottanut myös sivuprojekteihin: olen samalla piirrellyt myös omia kuvituksiani. Society6-sivulleni olen tehnyt muutamia kissoja ja piakkoin latailen sinne myös muita kuvituksia. Työn alla myös pari kuvituskorttisarjaa ja muuta uutta.

Tämä on tavallaan kaikkein tylsintä aikaa: ziljoonia projekteja meneillään, mutta ei mitään näytettävää, ei ulkopuolisille - eikä myöskään edes todistusaineistoksi itselleni siitä, että oikeasti saan aikaiseksi jotain.


I have been working like maniac through June. All kinds of background jobs, not very visible stuff. It feels like I'm not achieving anything and really doing nothing, even though every working day is at least twelve hours and every evening I'm so tired, that I nearly fall a sleep while sitting in living room arm chair. And, not nearly: I've fallen asleep nearly every evening before getting to bed.

But there is something creative going on also: I got a big illustration commission, that I'm working with through the whole summer and until autumn. It is fun but also a bit heavy on its subject - which is not a very fun thing and also touches my life personally - so, I've been working very emotionally. Somehow the illustration process has been easier than normally, but also twice as tiredning: I feel I'm so deep in the subject that bringing myself mentally back to the normal mode in life in between the illustration sessions is a bit hard. And I've hardly started the process!

This illustration commission has inspirated me to draw other stuff too. I've added some cat illustrations to my Society6 page and soon also some other stuff. Also working with some new illustrated card series and other stuff.

But this is the most boring time for this kind of stuff: zillions of projects on their way, and nothing ready to show yet, to others - or as evindence to prove to myself that I'm actually doing something.

Galleria Henkevän silakan ensimmäiset versiot // The very first layouts of The Gallery Spirited Herring

Yhden aikakauden loppu: Galleria Henkevä Silakka on arkistoineen suljettu - ainakin toistaiseksi. Avasin verkkotaiteen gallerian vuonna 1997 kaikille avoimena galleriana. Se oli ensimmäinen laatuaan Suomessa ja aikalailla ensimmäisten joukossa koko maailmassa. Ajatuksena oli saada paitsi esityspaikka omille teoksille (verkkotila ei ollut tuolloin niin helposti saatavilla kuin nykyään), myös tarjota paikka muille ja luoda verkkotaiteen kokoelma. Teoksia kokoelmaan on karttunut vuodesta 1997 html-koodatuista alkuajan nettitöistä demoihin, alkuaikoina enemmän kuin viime vuosina.

Alkujaan päivittelin verkkogalleriaa käsin html-kielellä, myöhemmin siirryttiin tietokantaan. Alkujaan pidin galleriaa pystyssä omin voimin, sitten sen ympärille alkoi kertyä enemmän tai vähemmän hommaan sitoutunut työryhmä, myöhemmin se oli Keski-Suomen taidetoimikunnan projektina ja Live Herring -työryhmän läänintaiteilijakauden ajan Live Herring vastasi sen ylläpidosta - hienoa sikälikin, että koko Live Herring syntyi tavallaan galleriatoiminnan kautta. Läänintaiteilijakauden jälkeen sivusto on ollut jälleen täysin omalla vastuullani sekä sisällöllisesti että kustannuksiltaan. Jo vuoden alussa mietin gallerian kohtaloa ja tein jonkinlaisia suunnitelmia sen kehittämiseksi, mutta realiteetit tulivat eteen aika pian. Tällä hetkellä ei ole yksinkertaisesti aikaa eikä oikein energiaakaan panostaa gallerian kehittämiseen tai ylläpitoon: muilta töiltä jäävä aika on muutenkin kortilla ja sen jälkellä olevan ajan haluan vihdoin keskittyä vähäksi aikaa täysin omien teosteni tekemiseen. Noin kuukausi sitten tuli aiheelliseksi muuttaa tietokannan salasanoja ja tiukentaa turvallisuutta, ja kun tuolloin minulla ei ollut siihen aikaa, suljin gallerian "väliaikaisesti" - enkä ehtinyt tekemään asialle mitään siihen mennessä, kun muutama päivä sitten tuli lasku verkkosivutilasta. Tajusin, etten myöskään halua enää käyttää rahojani projektin tekohengitykseen. Galleriassa oli hienoja töitä esillä, sinne tuli säännöllisesti - joskin harvenevasti - uusia teoksia ja siellä kävi muutaman tuhatta ihmistä kuukausittain katsomassa niitä, mutta toimiakseen jatkossakin sivu olisi tarvinnut totaalista remonttia.

Gallerialle ei ole nyt resursseja, mutta se ei tarkoita sitä, että olisin kokonaan irtisanoutunut siitä. Viimeisessä galleriaversiossa olleet teokset ovat tallessa ja on hyvin mahdollista, että galleria vielä palaa uusittuna jossain vaiheessa, mutta tuskin ainakaan tämän vuoden aikana, ja ehkä ei ensi vuodenkaan, ellei gallerialle löydy toista kehittäjää ja kustantajaa.

Galleria Henkevän SIlakan domain webgalleria.net on parkkeerattuna tällä hetkellä Colorian alaisuuteen ja johtaa Colorian pääsivulle. (Siinä toinen iso projektini, joka tällä hetkellä taistelee olemassa olostaan: se on odottanut totaalista uusimista jo melkein seitsemän vuotta, mutta en ole sillekään onnistunut löytämään rahoitusta ja tällä hetkellä on epävarmaa, miten sivuston lopulta käy - en haluaisi sitä "kuolleenakaan" verkossa pitää. Mutta se on toinen tarina.)

Vähän outo olo. Galleria vaati satoja, ellei suorastaan tuhansia työtunteja ja tarjosi sekä ilon että stressin hetkiä paitsi itselleni, myös kaikille niille muille, jotka olivat mukana tekemässä ja kehittämässä sivustoa näiden seitsemäntoista vuoden aikana. Kiitos teille kaikille mukana olleille, sekä gallerian kehittäjille että taiteilijoille - teitä oli monta! Ja kyllä, galleria olisi ansainnut toisenlaisen lopetuksen kuin hiljaisen hiipumisen ja hätäisen sammutuksen - mutta toivotaan, että tämä sammutus on vain väliaikaista.


EDIT: Juuri, kun olin julkaissut tämän, sain sähköpostiini kaverilta linkin: Opiskelijat ideoivat nettiin maksuttoman videotaidegallerian, joka toimii hyvin samantyyppisesti videoiden kanssa kuin mitä Galleria Henkevä Silakka toimi nettitaiteen kanssa! Mahtava juttu!



The end of one era: the online web art gallery Spirited Herring is closed - at least for now. I started the online web art gallery in 1997 as an open-to-all free gallery. It was the first one in Finland and amongst the very first ones in all over the world. My objective was to find a place to show my own work (web space was not so easily available then) but also to offer similar exhibition are for other people, and also another objective was to found a collection of (digital / interactive) web art works. The collection has grown since 1997 and  includes works from simpe html coded works to demos.

At first I maintained the gallery by coding html, later it was database based. At first it was solely my project, but afterwards some people started to gather around to work (volunteers) with me. Later the art council of Central Finland financed the gallery project, and when Live Herring group was working as a regional artist for five years (2009-2013), it took care of the gallery (which was fine, since the whole Live Herring activities were kind of based on the gallery work). Since beginning of this year the site has been again totally my responsibility both contentwise and with expences. Already at the beginning of this year I was thinking about the destiny of the gallery and made some plans to develope it, but quite soon I bumped into realities. Right now I simply don't have enough time or energy to invest in developing or administration of the gallery: the time I have left from other jobs and projects is not enough anyway, and I want to use all the time possible to my own artistic work. About a month ago it was necessary to change the database passwords and tighten the security, and when I didn't have time then, I just closed the gallery "temporarily" - and didn't get to chance to make any of the work required, when I received an invoice from web hotel. Right then I realised, that I don't want to use my money to keep the site alive - or forcing the project alive - in this condition. The gallery exhibited some fine web art works, it received regularly (though not as often now as before) new works and monthly a couple of thousand visitors came to view them, but to function in the future, it would have needed a full renovation.

At this moment there are no resources for the gallery, but it doesn't mean, that I would have quitted it forever. The collection of the last gallery version are safe and it is quite possible that the Spirited Herring will return some day, totally renoved. But not this year, and maybe not the next either, if somebody else won't take the gallery to develope and to sponsor.

The domain of the gallery Spirited Herring webgalleria.net leads now to the main page of Coloria, which is my another big project on colour - only in Finnish.

I feel quite odd. Gallery took hundreds, if not thousands of work hours and offered some moments of joy and utter stress not only for myself but to all those other people, who were working and developing the site during these seventeen years. Thank you all, both the developers and artists - there are many of you!  And yes, the gallery should have been ended in a different manner t han just to quiet fading and fast shut down - but let's hope that this break is just temporary one.


EDIT: I just posted it when I received a link to a story at a local newspaper, about one video art gallery, started by some students at www.videokanava.com - which idea is very much like it was in Spirited Herring, but with videos instead of net art!  Beautiful!
