Puu (ja prosessi) / A Tree (and a process)

Usein kokeilujen vaihe on hidas.

This is a tree. Maybe not obvious to everyone, but there it is, slowly coming visible.

I'm often asked about my work processes, and it's always difficult to reply to those questions, because there's not just one way to make a picture. Each work need its own approach and techniques. Often the most challenging part of the process is to find just right means and tools to realise the image in one's mind.

What is common to all my artwork is, that I make a lot of sketches and try outs. Sometimes ten, sometimes dozens. Often this phase of experimenting is the slow one. It takes weeks at least, but often months. I do not like compromizing, so I just continue as long as I see what I want to see.

It's also common, that however detailed the outlines of the artwork would be in my mind, I don't often start images by drawing. Yes, in the very beginning of the project, especially if the idea of the image is not so clear in my mind, I start sketching the shapes by drawing, until I roughly know the composition, but after that I don't draw before the final step of the design  (unless drawing isn't essential part of the final image). I feel that if I draw, I tend to control the image too much: even if I decide to not to "keep inside the lines". that is what happens. If there's not any randomness, the image will be stiff.

That's why, when the sketching process goes forward, I start from something else. I make colour surfaces, which I can, after getting some experience by training, control a bit, but not too much. I play with the dynamics of the highlights and the shadows. I play with creating randomness to the paper surface by scrathing the paper, or creasing it, or find another way to play with it.

This photo is also one of my numerous sketches for my new project - and one phase of the several phases. Next I'll probably find a fineliner, and find the tree.

When I'm looking at this photo, I'm pretty sure it is just a sketch. It could go differently. Sometimes I'm working with a sketch, but as I lay down my pens and brushes, I may notice that it is actually a finished artwork. Though that is unusual. In most of the cases I know this point, that there is still a lot to do, and lots of sketches ahead of me.

Projekteja projektin perään / Projects after project

Koska olen luonteeltani luetteloija, tein tietenkin itselleni työlistan:
  • Antotypia-projektit. Työprosessia voi seurata omassa blogissaan osoitteessa anthotypical.wordpress.com ja IG:ssa hashtagilla #kuvienkaiku
  • Coloria 20v -projektit.
  • Uusia teoksia:
8 uutta vedosta Toinenlainen arki -sarjaan.
6 uutta vedosta Ihmisiä saarillaan -sarjaan.
12 uutta vedosta / uudet sarjat.

  • Colour Wheels Gone Mad - monotypia / monoprint -projekti Coloria.netin 20-vuotisjuhlavuoteen liittyen.
Lisätietoa, kunhan speksit on täysin kunnossa.

First I almost paralyzed and got nothing done, and now I've found myself in this super hyper over active mode with dozens of project on my desk, and not even one I could leave without attention. I just have to balance in a way that every project gets some attention at some point.

Because I like doing lists, I made a list of these:
  • Anthotype projects which you can follow in their own work diary at anthotypical.wordpress.com and on my IG with hashtag #kuvienkaiku
  • Coloria 20 years projects - my colour themed website turns twenty this year. All the events and workshops I planned were cancelled, but I've not given up. There will be two display window exhibitions, and you can follow preparing of those in IG with hashtag #coloria20 (Not much yet...) The other tiny exhibition on natural dyes will be shown in my studio display window, and I'll share more information of the other later on.
  • New artworks
8 new prints to the Another kind of life series.
6 new prints to the People on their islands series.
12 new prints / new series.

These have been on my desk for ages, and almost finished, but I just can't find "clear" time to really finish those sketches and print the first test prints of them. But until the most acute phase of my anthotype project is over...
  • Colour Wheels Gone Mad - monotype / monoprint -project for my Coloria.net 20 year anniversary. I finally received all the materials I need this week, so I can start the work by the beginning of may. This project can be folloed in IG with hashtag #colourwheelsgonemad
  • Another monoprint project... there's a bit secrecy still, but I have planned this since the spring last year! A couple of months ago I finally figured out how to do this, and I also have now materials for this, and I can start working with it in May too. More information to come!
  • A booklet about colour and chemistry (in Finnish only) has been written already a few years ago, but is still missing illustrations and layout. I had preserved some time to do this (of course) unluckily from this spring, and of course I had to reschedule everything. But it's on its way and I'm planning to find time somewhere. (Printing it will be whole another thing, since all the money I've saved for this are needed now elsewhere. But it will be ok in some way - and I worry about it then, when the booklet is otherwise ok.)

Here are the most important ones, which I thought to make by Midsummer. Not very realistic scheduling though, because most of these projects include all kinds of time-consuming subprojects. But I need to be unrealistic, if I just want to get something done.

And like this wasn't enough... I just started setting up a web shop for myself today. I haven't worked with web site projects for a couple of years now, and I can tell, that all the knowledge vanishes pretty fast. I had to google the instructions for making a child theme... so I won't be expecting this to open anytime soon... :D

Siivoamista ja kirppistelyä / Cleaning and flea marketing

***

It's just another chaotic August... I try to view this renovation preparing as a chance to the clearness. Emphasis on the word 'try'. I should finish a few image series, write a few articles, prepare myself for the Habitare fair and at the same time prepare our home for the renovation and move to a temporary house... And as a bonus I should still finish our kitchen renovation plan, which was notably more clear half a year ago in my head.

I'm pretty sure I can manage this all by scheduling everything and following the plan exactly. (I hope.)

I'll start by Habitare preparations, because our move-out date is exactly the same time when Habitare will start, and the week before is the most busiest week of all. I cherish the thought that if I'll get all the Habitare preparations made in time, I can then concentrate fully on moving and renovation on the week before.

I started packing small stuff already in July, and I've selected those that will go in my studio and those that I'll resell or recycle. The lack of room for all my stuff has been a problem for a while , and it won't get any easier in future, so this is a good time to check which things I am ready to give up. There are, for example, a lot of books and magazines, which I can't keep, even if I'd like to.

I decided to take part to the Cleaning Day event (flea market event) for a long time ago. First I had planned to carry all my stuff outside our house in garage sale style, but there's too much renovation stuff - not an optional choice. So, it was nice to remember my studio in the city center! On the last day of August I'll carry all my flea market stuff in the front of my studio.

Just to be clear: there won't be any of my artworks on flea market or in any sale. First I planned to keep my studio door closed all together, to avoid any misunderstandings, but then I started to think that if I'll be there anyway it would be quite stupid to keep my studio door closed...

So, welcome on August 31 from 10am to 3pm - fleamarket outside and a studio exhibition and normal price artworks inside!

Sijaistoimintoja - Avoiding

No, nyt turhat pois. Työpöytä tyhjänä, materiaalit esiin, ja töihin. Kyllä tämä tästä, tekemällä.

And so it happened exactly how I predicted: the weekend in Helsinki and in Korjaamo Design Market gave me lots of energy. I didn't quite get myself to stop thinking about my upcoming exhibition works, when my head spinned around the problems through the train trips almost nonstop - but I also found some relieving solutions. (Mostly I really really like working with new artworks, but at this kind of situation, where the realisation starts to reach the limits of my abilities, and I try and I try but I'm not getting the results I had planned - that is when the work starts to feel too difficult and is not so nice to come back to.) I switched my ticket to an earlier train and instead of returning home at early Monday morning, I returned already on Sunday evening before eleven. Back then I was so filled with energy, that I could have worked with my exhibition all through the night!

But that I didn't to, but I just ate something small and went to sleep. And on Monday morning I woke up about ten and I was sooooo tired. Working with my exhibition felt so hard, that I decided to get some necessary paper work done instead. (You can imagine how repulsive my exhibition work now feels, when I chose to work with bills and book keeping which I normally hate rather than with creative work...) I even got one grant application finished - which took several hours instead of the usual about one. In the evening I took a walk, and there in the wind and cold rain I was thinking that this didn't go at all like I had planned.

I already had decided earlier to have yesterday as a day for other things: I took new prints to Gallery Becker, and first three exhibition prints to the frame shop, and October book keeping papers and receipts for my book keeper (and we also checked out some tax stuff). I had a short renovation meeting at my new studio, after which I picked a few parcels from the post office and then through Clas Ohlson and K-rauta - a couple of 3 liter paints and other reno stuff. I was at home after eight pm, and I then managed to sign a few of my prints - and numbered them wrong. (Eraser won't work enough, I just move the prints to be my notebook covers, and then I redo them later.)

Today was meant to be only for my exhibition works, but I've spent already a few hours in web shops. So far I've ordered a new bag for myself and a new cordless vacuum cleaner for my studio. A few moments ago I found myself searching flea market pages (for a 50s style petite arm chair, just like the one I used to have when I was a teenager, which was so nice to sit and write on). I just closed all my browsers and emptied my desk of all things not necessery for my work - but still I managed to find one way to avoid my work: I haven't written my blog as often as I would like...

Ok, here it is. Desk emptied, materials taken out, and to work. It will happen only if I'll make it to happen.

Kiire, kiireempi, kiirein / Busy, busier, busiest!

---

Making my upcoming Time between seconds exhibition at Gallery Becker has not happened just like I had planned. First there were some issues with materials, then techinal problems, then the prices of the secondary materials proved to be too high, some issues with my abilities to work with this and the latest problems were with a subcontracting job I ordered - amongs other challenges I've met with this project. I already moved to plan B a while ago, and right now I must be about at plan Q. But I'm not frustrated in a way that I have been with some other exhibitions, because with this project, I still don't have to compromise at all contentwise. From the beginning I planned this theme to be a slowly growing multimedia project, just like the Garden of Tears has been (the media elements are not finished to that one too, because this year I had to choose either my work with them or with the book) - so this time I just changed my exhibition plan and I'm picking just another kind from the artworks of the same theme than I originally had planned.

But it still bugs me a bit that I used so much time for my installation pieces and video projection, and I just realised to let them go a bit too late. The work itself wasn't done in vain, because the plans and works are very near to be finished, and they are almost ready for the upcoming exhibitions. But still I am annoyed that yet again I find myself in a situation where I'm having this almost unbearable hurry with my image based artworks. Luckily most of them are only missing the final touch, but some of them are still in very raw stage, because I had totally missed working with them when I was so concentrated on the installation and video work. There's only three weeks until the exhibition will open, and I still haven't even made my colour tests yet. Thinking of next week fills my head with horror - I'll have to work almost 24/7 to get everything done and framed in time. (And when do I really get to move to my new studio? I'm starting to be impatient!)

Anyway: no better pause for my work with exhibition than the next weekend. Today I've packed my stuff into two suitcases, and tomorrow I'll drag them with me to the train to Helsinki. Tomorrow I'll plan just to rest first on the train and then on the silence and emptiness of the hotel room for one day before the Korjaamo Design Market on Saturday and Sunday.

I've told everyone, that I'll be travelling 'lightly'  - but that just isn't true at all. Paper is heavy as a sin, and probably more. It just might be that when I drag these suitcases in Helsinki streets in slight (hopefully slight) rain, I might not be so prompted to smile... But I still believe that a weekend with people will bring just the kind of energy to me, that I need to finish my artworks next week!

Jyväskylän Designtorilla ja Habitaressa / At the Jyväskylä Designtori and Habitare

Pöydän laittaminenhan on jo ylihuomenna!

Three weeks in Berlin went past just like that. My fingers were already moving, waiting to get to write my blog, but wihtout wifi... I've never felt easy to write with my mobile, and when I shared my mobile data with my laptop, that idiot started uploading huuuuuge update for Windows, and I was afraid that I would be debted for life because of that - so I plugged my laptop offline. And now when I'm back at home, there's no time in life for words; my life is just packing and transporting things from one place to another again. I'm very happy about it, though.

I had planned to bring some of the unique artworks I made in Berlin already to the Jyväskylän Designtori next weekend, but now I'm noticing, that it's simply too short time to finish and pack them. I'll have to go fix my desk already the day after tomorrow! However I did manage to get some print from my studio today, at the most horrible rain ever (of course now it's sunny), and I'll probably get some new notebooks made (with covers of my testprints) in the evenings.

But I'll save the most of my energy to Habitare. That is a huuuge thing for me, as I'm having a booth on my own, and because after a three week residency my brain activity is just a narrow straigt line, I'm even more nervous than last year. I'm very happy about the fact, that I got so many jobs finished before my residency, because now it feels that even the most basic things are being too hard for me. (I for example finished and brought to my frame shop a very new work When a Horse Wanted to Hide in Flowers which I will introduce in Habitare for the first time, there will be a sneak peek at my personal Habitare FB event page).

While I'm writing this I'm at the same time cutting my prints - a few prints after one sentence. The paper is surprisingly tought thing to fight with: it's insanely heavy to lift and if you cut it with guillotine cutter, you may just have the kind of pain in neck that doesn't go away for weeks. So, this time, again, my working is running from one spot to another, but then again: I'm not facing an impossible hurry yet, and after three weeks of writing residency, it's perfectly fine!)

Kuvakauppiaan päivä / Illustration-Shop Keeper's Day

The Society6 site renewed itself already last year, but I haven't got time to react in anything until now. (Well, I wouldn't really have any time now either, but my brain just don't have it in to make any thought processing right now.) So, I started yesterday evening and continued through the whole morning to renew my categories and keywords in all my three Society6 stores. The finished ones are society6.com/kuvituksia (in which I will later sell my illustrations outside Monsterium world, but which still contains only Knitting with Attitude! project illustrations) and society6.com/coloria (which shows colour themed remakes of old colour systems, and the profit of which I will spend on maintenance of my Coloria page and other colour projects). I still have a lot to do with my first store at society6.com/paivihintsanen, in which I'm now concentrating my cartoony Monsterium universum illustrations, which - most of them - are a bit odd and off. I'm delighted to make some product editions too: I will remove all hoodies (my choice) from all my stores, but instead there will be for example note books and bath mats to offer.

Right now I'm living quite exciting times, illustrationwise. During January I've found out about two illustration-related projects, of which I really can't talk anything about yet. Let's see what happens. I had to apply to another one, but I was invited to another one, and my head is stil spinning with this all - I try to avoid making time a steeplechase course again.

Habitare 2016 - osasto/booth 3b20

Vuosisatojen vaeltaja - The Wanderer of Centuries.
2015, 1/1, pigmentin siirto vanerille / pigment transfer on plywood

FB-tapahtuma (saa jakaa)

Soon I'll catch a train to Pasila (Helsinki) and Habitare Fair, and I'm wondering if I can form any understandable sentences during the whole week, when I'm standing at my booth (3b20). I'm that tired already.

I've started this project like preparing myself to travel into another timezone completely: during a few weeks time I've let my alarm clock ring about five to ten minutes earlier each morning, until today I finally got up at seven (and my head is spinning). This all, because I want to be at my booth early enough each day, even after the hotel breakfast (which I have paid and which I will enjoy, because I hardly have any money to eat anything else the whole week). Waking up at seven doesn't probably sound very early, but when your life has been in whole another life rhythm, say almost quarter of the day later... Well, let me put it this way: waking up at seven would not be hard at all, if I could fix my rhythm also at the end of the day and if I'd learned to go to sleep much earlier. Why in the earth it is, that the best time for all the ideas and working with them is always after the midnight?

I'm very proud of myself in that I started preparing for the fair early enough this time. A month ago I was thinking that I started working ridiculously early for this, then a few weeks ago a slight panicky feeling started to form, and the two last day before packing the car on Saturday were quite horrible. Still I did some paperworks during the weekend. And the actual building of the booth is still ahead: today.

I have seen some wonders too. When at Thursday the whole day was spent on packing the materials for the fair and I got the whole hallway filled with mys stuff, I started to be a little bit nervous of how it would all fit in the car. I already made some b-plans. But we could have put even more stuff into the car, easily. (But for my tiny booth... probably not.)

Kirjoitellen ja väritellen // Writing and Colouring

Nimi on hakusessaan edelleen.

---

I've started each morning with a long breakfast, colouring my own colouring book at the same time, approximately one picture per day. A wonderfully slow and easing beginning before the working day. After breakfast I've spent my days with my fingers on keyboard, pushing a letter after letter. The wordy project of last week was about the small booklet about colour and chemistry, which I wrote last autumn with a grant, and which I try to edit now, at the same time when I'm making a plan for illustrations and write some captions for pictures. The title of the book is still unclear. I thought that I would finish the raw layout of the booklet before I'll send my grant report, so I can attach some visible results to it, but the electric publication of the booklet will propably take until the end of the very busy spring. (After the raw layout is finished, the booklet will then go to the fact checking round). It takes time, because I have added again some new distraction to my life - which will hopefully turn out to be a constructive operator in my life later.

I thought that I concentrated on writing the whole last week, but I just noticed, that at the same time I have made several sketches for my new artworks and many of the artworks in process just took a clearer form in my head. It feels somewhat crazy, that when I didn't concentrate on my visual art work at all during the last week (except for the daily ice photo sessions), I propably achieved more with the preparing work that I did last year in many months.

If I continue like this, I hope to get some projects also finished soon.

Plankkon kuukauden teos / The Artwork of the Month

Teokseni Kyynelpuun taimi (2013) on Plankkon kuukauden teoksena. Lue teoksen taustasta Plankkon nettisivuilta.

---

My print The Seedling of the Tree of Tears (2013) is Plankko Artwork of the Month in January 2016. I have written a short story about it in the Plankko webpage (in Finnish), here's a rough translation:

The Seedling of the Tree of Tears is an artwork that I can't get out of my system (and I don't know how to and don't really want that to happen). The work was finished in the beginning of 2013, that is about exactly three years ago, but it is still as current to me as it was when I made it.

The Seedling of the Tree of Tears follows thematicly the Fruits of the Tree of Tears trilogy, which was finished a year earlier, and these works and all the future artworks on this theme are fruits of the Tree of Tears work, still unfinished - it is my ongoing project, which I had planned to be rather big sized and which I have made on and off about ten years. (The theme itself is very clear for me and a general sketch is drawn, but after dozens of testings I still haven't found a right way to finish the work and I still have to make several material tests befgore I find the right way to go on.)

I have planned the whole Tree of Tears theme as a bigger whole, which would be installation-like, or maybe a different kind of garden-like installation at the exhibition. When I have gone round about the theme, I have also started to write a small Teargardener Memo book, to which I have documented my working process during the years, and now and then I have made some notes regarding the Tree of tears, and its seedlings and fruits - facts and fiction generously mixed. When I made the Fruits of the Tree of Tears trilogy in 2012, I actually made it as an illustration to this book, and right after I had printed the series, I realised that I would like to have a different kind of resonance to those other artworks, that would depict the seedlings surrounding the tree of tears. I tried about everything to find the right path. I tried to set up different kind of nursery gardens placing clay pots around here and there, and I tried taking reference phohos of real plants at flower shops and at corners of fields, but nothing seemed to work. In a way I had very clear in my mind what I would like to make, but not clear enough to just replicate the image and atmosphere what I had tattooed in my mind.

Until at the end of summer 2012 we travelled to Florence. The merciless heatwave was scorching the city and media warned about moving outside in midday because of the heat. There was no green anywhere: the sun had burned the grass and tree leaves of the parks to dry and brown, and because there was shortage of water, no plants could be watered. We saw the impact clearly at the botanical garden (Giardino dei Semplici), where the plants were swaying exceptionally colourless and where the grass crunched under our feet, even when the high and bushy trees made some shady shadown to the garden. The most sensitive plants and seedlings had been moven in the chill of the stone building, here and there around concrete wall several plant refugees tried to survive. I was very concentrated on photographing the mesmerizing light, that flowed in between the canvas shreds which covered the windows partly and tried to protect the place from the sun - and then I suddenly realised that I was in the middle of the garden of the trees of tears. There were some clay pots on the window board, that had some moist black soil in them, not scorched by the sun. There were no seedlings of the tree of tears of course, but next to them was a small notebook with some notes in them, just what I had imagined the Teargardener Memo book to be. The afternoon light sifted in in unspeakable manner, and I just saw the works around me, ready to be picked. I took dozens of photos, and one of them gave a life to the first Seedling of the Tree of Tears and ended up printed.

The Seedling of the Tree of Tears was finished as a "single" work, although that wasn't the plan originally: the two sister prints of same size are still waiting to be finished. Right after printing the artwork I had to leave my creative work for a while because of other responsibilities, and after that some other duties have kept me away from my Trees of Tears. But the process hasn't ended. After a three year break I visited the Giardino dei Semplici a second time in 2015, taking photos with a better camera and in a different light. During the autumn 2015 I sorted and indexed the pictures ready for the working process and I drew a significant amount of sketches to the Teargardener Memo book.

I also returned in very concrete way to The Seedling of the Tree of Tears artwork last year, when I had to make the last prints of the series (of edition of 15). Because the colour range of my new inks was a bit different, I had to readjust colours and I had to examine the artwork very closely and as pedanticly as I did when I originally made the artwork. At first repeating the same (different) process mostly irritated me, but after I got to work, I noticed that I'm looking at the artwork in very different way as I did when I made it first time. I found several details which I had forgotten, and I learned to structurise some technical solutions, which inspired to continue the series. I have left the test and colour adjustment prints in my work desk and they are filled with notes for the future. So, the artwork turned to be also my tool for the future works on this theme.

In a way The Seedling of the Tree of Tears is a key work to the whole Tree of Tears entity, in which all the works will follow the visual path this work has built. Then, someday, when it will be finished.

Joan as Police Woman - What Would You Do

[Poissa/Absent 142. Pigmenttimustetuloste / pigment ink print, 15x14cm.]

Olen ihan villinä riemusta leikellyt kahdeksasta hyllypaketeista taustapahveja teoksilleni.

Peukut pystyyn!

We broke the silence of the Ascension Day (which is public holiday in Finland) by assembling the another Expedit shelf and by adding some plywood and angle irons to both before moving them to their final places. Again it was a perfect day for this kind of work: it's cold outside, and so grey and dark, that we've had lights on the whole day. The rain patters comfortable to the window glass (well, it's nice to be inside and warm). Assembling the shelves didn't take much time, but other things - adding the plywood and additional screws and angle irons - took so much hours that the project will continue still maybe a day or two. Hopefully we'll get to bolt the whole thing to a wall next weekend.

With wild joy I've been cutting all the cardboard of the eight shelf packages to my own package use. I'll have a proper stock of packaging material, which is normally almost always finished (because I don't want to use all my finances on buying expensive packaging materials - and also I prefer using this kind of recycled material). While the another room slowly starts to be organized heaven, my work room has turned into a cardboard and plastic wrap storage with piles of stuff lying around. I'm cutting all this material suitable for my purposes and try to make the piles smaller. Maybe I'll see my workroom floor again soon...

Today I've also written and sent an offer of quite large illustration work. It's not certain, that the project will be handed to me, but I've already have filled the paper corners with sketches. The theme of the illustration project is very important and very close to myself, and after reading a brief, my pen just started to move by itself... I hope I can tell more about this project later. Keep your fingers crossed!

Purson - Mavericks & Mystics

Vuodenvaihde on mennyt näppärän nopeasti. On tehnyt hyvää sielulle.
