I don't use cellphone (!), but I can't manage without my tablet, which has practically grown into my hand. Generally I've been avoiding all photo sharing sites and applications, but after a long long what-if time I decided to try Instagram - and after a few weeks I'm hooked. I have thought about having some kind of photo journal before, but with separate camera that has been somehow too difficult. Now, when this extended arm piece is with me all the time, the thought of the photo journal is suddenly much lighter - and at the end of October I thought that I sould try again to see, what my (working) life looks like as photos. ("Working" in a way, that even though I take my photos while working, I've already during these few days gone somewhere else, outside the work itself, to wonder about grey sky and drying flowers - maybe in this project the photos will be more about my working surroundings and those separate moments in my work days and not so much about my ink spotted hands.) My aim is to snap (at least) one photo per day, and if a day or two will pass without, then I've just had better things to do.

Day of mixed (commission) work. Web site design works, illustration commission and even one writing commission. Today my own creative work has to wait, even though I'd like to start working with my images right now. It absolutely burns my mind to know, that I have to wait still several days to get my hands on my own creative work. The next few days are reserved for meetings and running errands and the following few ones I have to book for my office work, so that those paper piles won't grow too much. Maybe then next weekend...

Pulp - Countdown

After coming back from Spain, I have just waited if the flu is coming or not. No fewer so far, but mentally I've been sick while every small thing feels a big one and nothing happens effortless. And the every day life started too fast: after unpacking the luggages I suddenly realized that I didn't remember filling the grant applications before our trip and since the last day of October is deadline for several grants... So, fingers tapping the keyboard and printer pushing out attachment images - and after one day non-stop working a pile of grant applications were finished. At the same time while I slipped the grant applications to envelopes, I also packed some prints that were ordered during our trip and also packed a pile of postcards for the Jyväskylä Art Museum shop (which they inquiried well before our trip - but I was just too busy...). Yesterday I power-walked via local art council to drop a few grant applications, and via art museum and postoffice (and apotechue) to a grocery store, bought several kilos of food and drove home by bus - totally exhausted. I just watched the telly and thought that now I've propably done enough to just rest for the whole weekend.
Today I started with a slow breakfast until I suddenly remembered that Tampere Art Fair is only a few weeks away - I have to order packaking material and possibly new postcards during this weekend, if I want to get them on time. So, started the day with a card inventory. Here goes my free weekend.
So, no halloween parties here. (And I didn't get to the ending party of my former school, Tampere University of Applied Sciences / Art and Media, either. The school is transferred to other building, but generally it is thought that the "old" school is finished and everything that was especially great in that school and why the school was worth while to attend to, is now or soon gone. Like the combination of technology and art.)

Loma / Holidays
Sen voimalla paluumatka junassa kului innottavaa to do -listaa kirjoittaessa.

I travelled to Andalucia, Spain, to work with my writing stuff, but it hasn't quite happen. The last few weeks I've been having a real holiday - which culminated yesterday, when we went to beach in Fueringola to take sun baths and to swim in the sea. Originally we travelled from Alora to Fuegirola to visit the Biopark, of which the Natural Geographic has written a positive article about, and the beach just happened to be there... I've never considered myself to be a sunny beach person in anyway, but this autumn's darkness in Finland has been a bit too heavy to bear. It felt good to sat there in the sun, to swim in the sea and just to be.
With the word holiday I mean days when I don't start determined working right after waking up. It seems that I really don't know how to have a 100% holiday: when I read something, my own stories and sentences start to fill my mind (I've filled two small Moleskine booklets with all kinds of writings), and I start to get new ideas for new pictures when I just glimpse some images. Though during the trip to Prado in Madrid at the beginning of the week, it was not an inspiration that I got, but an overwhelming visual tiredness. Itwas great to see the paintings by Bosch and Goya, but in general the Spanish art is too detailed and ornamental to my taste. After Prado we couldn't even think about visiting the other museums, and we spent the rest of the trip sitting in cafes instead. I've got the biggest inspiration of all in one record store / gift shop, which had some clever small stuff to be sold. I got inspired enough to write a long to do list on our train trip back to Alora.
Today I made a few sketches for one illustration commission. But otherwise I will just sit and read in the sun, because in a few days time that's no longer an option.

Manic Street Preachers - Rewind The Film
[Suojapaikaksi kaareutuvat taivaat / Sheltering, Arching Skies. Pigmenttimustetuloste (päällekkäistulostus) / pigment ink print, over printing technique, ~11,5x35cm (+marginaali), ed. 5.]
Montakohan litraa mustetta olen saanut tällä viikolla kulumaan?

I was wondering of how many litres of ink I've must have spent this week... I've drawn so much, that my hand is aching. I can hardly hold a pen and my head can hardly carry a thought. My brain is stuttering. I have managed to finish the biggest projects and also I've managed to put the little stuff to some kind of order. So, it's the perfect time to have a few weeks off. I thought about starting to get ready for Tampere Art Fair (in mid-November) at the beginning of November, and until then just concentrate on something else, but not to pictures. Like writing. And just existing.
And colours. During the past week I have agreed of two colour themed lectures at the Jyväskylä Adult Education Center next spring and I also received two other emails requesting lectures or workshops. One of the new contacts is so interesting that I'm overwhelmed with the whole idea of getting close to that kind of project. I can't tell anything about it yet, but when the project is more current, I know I can't hold my words... These contacts have made me work with colour the last few days...

Mark Lanegan - Harvest Home

Sometimes it's relieving to see, that my projects "in process" aren't just parts of forever growing mountain, but sometimes some projects actually end too. During the whole summer I was working for The Alzheimer Society of Finland making some demanding illustrations and a few years ago (or, almost a month ago, as I noticed when I was writing this) I finally got my part of the project finished. The final prints will be published in November.
After the project I've been sort of flowing around with my own work. All kinds of small stuff (updating websites and small graphic design jobs, packing my artprints and writing bills for buyers, all kinds of paper works) I have enough allright, but I just don't know where to start with my own projects, those which are initiated by me and for me. There are dozens of those in process, but at the same time I have several new ideas for images and other projects in my head - should I finish the old ones first, or start already with the new ones? This indetermination of mine has lead to the situation where I actually don't do almost anything. At least not as much I had wished to do.
I found also a new way to run from the problems my indecisiveness caused: I started a process of which I wasn't even thinking and which wasn't originally among my choices of what to do. I have thought about revamping the whole coloria.net site (which is my Finnish colour themed page), but I was planning to get to it next spring, when there would me more time for everything - at least not now, when I constantly have to bang my head on the wall for not having time enough to do everything I would like to. But then, on one evening while I was watching television I just happened to drew a new logo for the site, half accidently, completely without thinking at all. I actually didn't think about using the drawing to anything at all, but then, one evening, I just found myself updating Coloria.net social media sites with a new logo, and at the same time I started the long waited renewing of the website. So, there is a new half-way done project waiting for realisation.
One day I was wondering, where does all my time go? Now I know: I spend all my time to create these new unfinished projects...

Yesterday I visited the dyeing course held by my friend Ulla Lapiolahti. I wanted to document dyeing process with woad and indigo and also try to dye some yak yarn samples. After the fires went down, I realised for the first time, that the weather has already cooled down. Somebody reminded that we should enjoy the sun in any way we can, because after this Sunday it won't be seen for a while. I guess she was right.
This morning I woke up around 10 am and it was still dark. I didn't get up right a way but kept looking at how the wind teased the ash outside (not sure about the tree, if it is ash or something else - maybe I should check it our more closely so I'd know by which trees surround my life). Somehow right now I am extremely happy about the fact, that I don't have to go anywhere today. And that I've found a warm woolly sweater for myself.
The autumn has come unnoticed and suddenly, because I have had too much living in my life during last month. In August we spent a few days in Rauma (old town is a Unesco World Heritage site), and we did a few days trip to Isokari lighthouse island (we also visited Kylmäpihlaja lighthouse island, where I sawa the natural woad growing a few years back, but I didn't find it again this time). In lighthouse island we enjoyed the smooth rocks against the sea and in the evening I had horror trips to the outdoor toilet, in pitch black night only with a small electric torch helping to find a way and also to see all the large cross spider communities on the walls; and after a few days we were already in London Regent Street walking towards the Making Colour exhibition at the National Gallery (and of course we did go to see the collections at the same time). (I bought a big pile of colour books from the museum shop, and I just had to leave some there, simply because I couldn't carry any more.) And again, after a few days back in Finland we went to pack the Höyry gallery exhibition and a week from that I found myself deadly tired at the Helsinki Fair Centre, packing some prints to cellophane bags and labeling them (I had a booth at the Habitare Furniture Fair with three other artists, Pia Feinik, Janne Laine and Anne Mäkelä). In between this time all things happened, both to myself and to my close ones, a bit too much to handle right now, in this short time.
During the last week I've desperately tried to do all my paper work, but for what ever reason the tiredness has grown very tight, like grime, on me. I don't really know how to get rid of it. The growing darkness doesn't help the situation. I've tried to rest, also watching movies (and Doctor Who reruns and Farscape dvds), but when all those little unfinished jobs are hanging there, on the back of my brain, it's hard to really relax and empty your mind. The next thing I'm going to do is to take one of the colour books I purchased from London, and take a big cup of vanilla coffee and to go sit to an armchair next to the window, and to listen the rain drumming on windowsill and the wind humming outside. After a few hours I just might be powered enough to get myself to work again.

Our exhibition at the Höyry gallery continues still just over one week. Every time it feels like the exhibitions end always almost rightaway after opening. This time the exhibition time is a whole month, a week longer than the three-week period normally used in Finnish galleries, but still I found myself surprised when I noticed that I should already arrange when to go to pack our works after exhibition and transport them back to our studios. We haven't received a lot of feedback, but some small positive comments - and one extremely good blog review of the exhibition (only in Finnish though).
The arrangements of the future events have filled my brain. After the exhibition ends, there is only one week time to frame artworks to Habitare Fair in Helsinki (FB event) and to the Jyväskylä Artists' Society's local art sale event, partly overlapping with Habitare (FB event). Last week (finally!) I also got the contract of Tampere Art Fair, so that's official now too - but gladly it will be happening only in November, so I have some time to prepare for that one.
My days are now spent with a large illustration commission (illustrations for the sad children's story are soon finished, and a cartoon that I already made needs only a few small changes) and the rest of the time seems to go to preparing for the events and to making the endless schedules for everything to happen in time. It doesn't matter if it is just a one day small event or something that takes the whole week, it always means unrestrained scheduling sessions and the parades of small things, and something small that I thought would take only a few hours turns to be a week of arduous work.

Last weekend we visited Isokari lighthouse on the west coast of Finland. Nature, sheeps, outdoor toilet with mosquitos and cross spiders. The weather was still and sunny - and in the evening the dense darkness took over, cutted only by the lighthouse light. The unbelievable beautiful rocks and the seawater was warm - even though I didn't go to swin, I walked long time in water reaching up to my knees and watched the stones at the bottom of the sea through the clear water.
The lighthouse is actually situated more near to Uusikaupunki town, but we took a boat from Rauma town for hours, and also visited Kylmäpihlaja lighthouse on our way, and on the way back we drove around near some pookis (sort of "lighthouses" without any lights in them), which made the trip a bit longer. Five-six hours in swaying boat was too much for landlubberish old me, and it took the whole Sunday evening to get over the nausea, and I still got the swinging feeling through the whole next day (and I couldn't eat anything on the train back home). But for those few moments in the middle of the sea, in the middle of nothingness, was worth it all.
We spent one extra (rainy) day in Rauma. Rauma old town is one of the Unesco world heritage sites, and I can understand why - there it really feels you are walking in past. The rainy Monday in August was a good day to visit the town, when most of the summer tourists were already gone and I was able to take some photos of the empty streets. But the tiredness of the trip started to take over, and almost the most relieving moment was, when I could change my wet socks and shoes to the dry ones and then take the bus back. (The trip ended quite sadly: five hour trip with one bus and two trains took finally seven hours, when the last train was standing two hours at the end of the trip, because someone had walked under another train on the rail.)
I didn't make any sketches during the trip, but I took dozens of photo notes. And got some ideas of new pictures, to be made in the near future.

Hiljaista piirtelyä / Drawing in silence
Elämä on pienissä hetkissä.

The life is in the small moments. Each morning a slow start for a day, some breakfast in a balcony; a cup of coffee, and another, and a book, words from another world. Warm summer rain in the darkening night. A scent of wet earth, slowly crawling from under the summer green grass, a hint of the autumn coming. Working without computer, sketching a raw, beautiful story for hours, sometimes inspiring and sometimes so hard to work with, that my pencil turns too heavy to hold. The last strawberries of summer. Light feeling of unattachment. A wish to have these moments preserved in small glass jars, to be opened years from now.

Mahdolliset kuvat tulevat esiin FB-sivulle: facebook.com/events/1457998774461110/
Huominen sunnuntai menee taas täysillä töiden äärellä: on vedoksia, joita pitää etsiä ja toisia, joita pitää tehdä, pitää kirjoittaa, päivittää, kääntää ja vääntää vaikka mitä. Mutta tänään vielä lekottelen lomatunnelmissa. Otan kirjan ja kupillisen kahvia ja teen oloni mukavaksi parvekkeella auringonpaisteessa.

The exhibition at Höyry gallery is now open. There were dozens of people in the opening and some artworks sold. It was a good start for the exhibition, in every way. After the opening we went to eat to a local restaurant Harmooni. We had the table reserved inside, but as it was so magnificent weather, and we found a perfect table at the Harmooni garden restaurant, we decided to stay outside and sat below one old apple tree eating really good food. (The food was actually really good, I can recommend that, but the dessert, strawberries with whipped cream, was almost a joke: only a few half-cut strawberries with strange cream - just made me feel bad for the one who paid the whole thing.)
Sadly our photos of the exhibition space didn't quite succeed. We probably have to make one more trip just to take some photos. Not that I mind: Höyry gallery and the place where it is situated, Korpilahti harbour, is one of my favourite places in Central Finland.
The possible new photos will be shown in FB site at facebook.com/events/1457998774461110/
Tomorrow, Sunday, I'll have to start working again: there are some prints to be searched and others to be printed, I have to write, make updates, turn and toss and everything possible. But today I still have a free day, la dolce vita, doing nothing. I'll just grab my book, take a cup of coffee and make myself confortable at my balcony, on the sunshine.

Valmistelua trooppisissa olosuhteissa - Getting ready on tropical conditions
Huomenna alkaa näyttelymme (Timo Sälekivi &
allekijoittanut) ripustus Höyry-galleriassa. Tässä signeeraan kuvia ja
valmistelen irtovedoksia myyntiin ukkosen kiertäessä taloamme ja sateen
ropistessa parvekelasiin. Ja tuulettimen viskellessä kuvia vääriin
pinoihin...
ripustukseen. Tänään kynän liikuttaminenkin on tuonut hien pintaan.

Tomorrow
we (Timo Sälekivi and I) will start to set up our exhibution in Höyry
gallery, in Korpilahti, Jyväskylä. I'm just signing and preparing some
non-framed prints while the thunder is wandering around our house and
the rain drops are hitting heavily on the glass window of our balcony.
And the fan is mixing my papers in wrong piles...
I don't remember the last time it was this hot in Finland, and I just heard that there could be even more hotter air coming from Russia next week! I hope that we'll manage the set up process well tomorrow. Today just moving the pencil upon paper has been A Project on its own.

Pelkoa ja vihaa taidelainaamossa - Fear and loathing at artotheque

In July 11 the Housing Fair opened in Jyväskylä: new one-family-houses and one high 13 floor building "Pillar of World" building (not sure if that's the official translation), in which Jyväskylä Artists' Society has a small, temporary artotheque in the ground floor. In this pop-up artotheque we show, sell and lend artworks from the artists who have volunteered to supervise the event in site during the Housing Fair. The event has gone well, especially, while most of the artists probably thought that the function of the pop-up artotheque is to tell the audience about the existence of the Jyväskylä Artists' Society and the artotheque itself. But the visitors have both bought and borrowed artworks quite well! I have been working on the site for five days - which have been very interesting, but also perplexing.
The guests who have visited our artotheque at the Housing Fair has been divided to three approximately same sized groups: to those, who know artotheques beforehand and have visited ones before; to those who are interested about art and probably thought about purchasing art, but have not yet bought any; and to those who haven't known anything about artotheques or buying or borrowing art. This is very rough survay of the people who have visited our pop-up artotheque, plus then there are those ones, who haven't visited the booth or those, who walk panicly and stressed through our small booth to reach the outdoor elevator which would take them fast to the twelft floor - they are walking fast, as afraid that we artist would be some kind of missionaries who would then forcely "convert" them to art.
The artworks shown have initiated conversation topics from almost every aspect of life, from Senegali sand drawings to the big tsunami of 2004, and from the strawberry field of one's grandmother living in very north of Finland to the holiday housing politics of French seaside villages, and those conversations have been like adventures taking to different places and new thoughts. However, the most interesting conversations I've had with some people, who consider the art world being ...outworldy. Something else. Many of those have been openly interested and mostly wondered, why someone has an urge to make art, and where do all the ideas come from ("What kind of tools of creativity do you use?"), not anything underrating or minimizing, but questions born from pure curiosity of the world unknown. These encourters have been the most greatest, like visiting on each others planets in other universes.
But then there are those few (and really just amount you can count with your fingers), who have been openly mean and shown their disgust to art, or their pure hate. I remember especially one family, who vere especially scornful while walking through our booth: the father of the family said very loudly (and couple of times to make sure I hear), that 'we walk now through this clown booth', and the teenager son of the family said gross about every artwork, which amused the father very much. The mother of the family looked away while walking; I don't know if that would have been fear about the artist suddenly talking to her, but I would like to think that she was somewhat shamed of her family behaving like that. When he was already halfway out, the man commented to me: 'Your work must be very hard' - not meaning it, obviously.
Seeing these people was so caricaturish that it mostly made me laugh, but I have to say, that their words have echoed in my head. It feels quite disturbing to see this kind of extreme phenomenon. I realize that art and the work of artists can't just fit to everyone's universe, but where does this kind hatred and spite com from? It can't just born from things like nasty drawing teacher in high school or someone breaking your colour chalks when you are small.
Or can it?

HAIM - If I Could Change Your Mind

| Curious Cat / Society 6 |
I have been working like maniac through June. All kinds of background jobs, not very visible stuff. It feels like I'm not achieving anything and really doing nothing, even though every working day is at least twelve hours and every evening I'm so tired, that I nearly fall a sleep while sitting in living room arm chair. And, not nearly: I've fallen asleep nearly every evening before getting to bed.
But there is something creative going on also: I got a big illustration commission, that I'm working with through the whole summer and until autumn. It is fun but also a bit heavy on its subject - which is not a very fun thing and also touches my life personally - so, I've been working very emotionally. Somehow the illustration process has been easier than normally, but also twice as tiredning: I feel I'm so deep in the subject that bringing myself mentally back to the normal mode in life in between the illustration sessions is a bit hard. And I've hardly started the process!
This illustration commission has inspirated me to draw other stuff too. I've added some cat illustrations to my Society6 page and soon also some other stuff. Also working with some new illustrated card series and other stuff.
But this is the most boring time for this kind of stuff: zillions of projects on their way, and nothing ready to show yet, to others - or as evindence to prove to myself that I'm actually doing something.

A Winged Victory for the Sullen - Minuet For A Cheap Piano Number One
![]() |
| Galleria Henkevän silakan ensimmäiset versiot // The very first layouts of The Gallery Spirited Herring |
Yhden aikakauden loppu: Galleria Henkevä Silakka on arkistoineen suljettu - ainakin toistaiseksi. Avasin verkkotaiteen gallerian vuonna 1997 kaikille avoimena galleriana.
Mahtava juttu!
The end of one era: the online web art gallery Spirited Herring is closed - at least for now. I started the online web art gallery in 1997 as an open-to-all free gallery. It was the first one in Finland and amongst the very first ones in all over the world. My objective was to find a place to show my own work (web space was not so easily available then) but also to offer similar exhibition are for other people, and also another objective was to found a collection of (digital / interactive) web art works. The collection has grown since 1997 and includes works from simpe html coded works to demos.
At first I maintained the gallery by coding html, later it was database based. At first it was solely my project, but afterwards some people started to gather around to work (volunteers) with me. Later the art council of Central Finland financed the gallery project, and when Live Herring group was working as a regional artist for five years (2009-2013), it took care of the gallery (which was fine, since the whole Live Herring activities were kind of based on the gallery work). Since beginning of this year the site has been again totally my responsibility both contentwise and with expences. Already at the beginning of this year I was thinking about the destiny of the gallery and made some plans to develope it, but quite soon I bumped into realities. Right now I simply don't have enough time or energy to invest in developing or administration of the gallery: the time I have left from other jobs and projects is not enough anyway, and I want to use all the time possible to my own artistic work. About a month ago it was necessary to change the database passwords and tighten the security, and when I didn't have time then, I just closed the gallery "temporarily" - and didn't get to chance to make any of the work required, when I received an invoice from web hotel. Right then I realised, that I don't want to use my money to keep the site alive - or forcing the project alive - in this condition. The gallery exhibited some fine web art works, it received regularly (though not as often now as before) new works and monthly a couple of thousand visitors came to view them, but to function in the future, it would have needed a full renovation.
At this moment there are no resources for the gallery, but it doesn't mean, that I would have quitted it forever. The collection of the last gallery version are safe and it is quite possible that the Spirited Herring will return some day, totally renoved. But not this year, and maybe not the next either, if somebody else won't take the gallery to develope and to sponsor.
The domain of the gallery Spirited Herring webgalleria.net leads now to the main page of Coloria, which is my another big project on colour - only in Finnish.
I feel quite odd. Gallery took hundreds, if not thousands of work hours and offered some moments of joy and utter stress not only for myself but to all those other people, who were working and developing the site during these seventeen years. Thank you all, both the developers and artists - there are many of you! And yes, the gallery should have been ended in a different manner t han just to quiet fading and fast shut down - but let's hope that this break is just temporary one.
EDIT: I just posted it when I received a link to a story at a local newspaper, about one video art gallery, started by some students at www.videokanava.com - which idea is very much like it was in Spirited Herring, but with videos instead of net art! Beautiful!

Joan as Police Woman - What Would You Do
[Poissa/Absent 142. Pigmenttimustetuloste / pigment ink print, 15x14cm.]
Olen ihan villinä riemusta leikellyt kahdeksasta hyllypaketeista taustapahveja teoksilleni.
Peukut pystyyn!
We broke the silence of the Ascension Day (which is public holiday in Finland) by assembling the another Expedit shelf and by adding some plywood and angle irons to both before moving them to their final places. Again it was a perfect day for this kind of work: it's cold outside, and so grey and dark, that we've had lights on the whole day. The rain patters comfortable to the window glass (well, it's nice to be inside and warm). Assembling the shelves didn't take much time, but other things - adding the plywood and additional screws and angle irons - took so much hours that the project will continue still maybe a day or two. Hopefully we'll get to bolt the whole thing to a wall next weekend.
With wild joy I've been cutting all the cardboard of the eight shelf packages to my own package use. I'll have a proper stock of packaging material, which is normally almost always finished (because I don't want to use all my finances on buying expensive packaging materials - and also I prefer using this kind of recycled material). While the another room slowly starts to be organized heaven, my work room has turned into a cardboard and plastic wrap storage with piles of stuff lying around. I'm cutting all this material suitable for my purposes and try to make the piles smaller. Maybe I'll see my workroom floor again soon...
Today I've also written and sent an offer of quite large illustration work. It's not certain, that the project will be handed to me, but I've already have filled the paper corners with sketches. The theme of the illustration project is very important and very close to myself, and after reading a brief, my pen just started to move by itself... I hope I can tell more about this project later. Keep your fingers crossed!

James - Frozen Britain
[Poissa/Absent 48. Pigmenttimustetuloste / pigment ink print, 15x14cm.]
Nimikoituna. Jospa sitten loppuisi myös jokaviikkoinen laturien etsimisruljanssi.
Tämä uusi järjestys kesän kynnyksellä tuntuu uudelta alulta. Inspiroivaa.

Big Little joys of life: last August we purchased two Ikea 5x5 Expedit shelves to divide one room in two spaces; in order to have more shelves for our books and lps, but also to have a small extra working space for me. Our lives have been so busy, that we haven't had a whole day to do this before, but yesterday we finally got some time to start the project. We spent the whole day working: assembling the shelf itself was a fast job, but before that we did some cleaning and threw away some stuff. We only assembled the first shelf, because we like to buy some backboards and some additional stuff to strenghten the shelves (because... Ikea). We will continue with the project at the end of the week, when all backboards and angle irons will be purchased.
But I'm feeling so glad already: soon the art books will find their new home on shelves instead of having to spend their life on piles on the floor. And then I'll have a spot, where I will sign my works and pack them to for shipping - until now I have managed to do all this by our kitchen table. It doesn't matter really, but even the smallest chores are strangely laborious when you have to clear the space every time and then search for the stuff you need all around the flat - and clean up everything straigthaway, when it is time to cook.
As a bonus round for this sudden need to organize everything, I ended up planning a chargery next to the doorway of the small extra space: I will design a small stand, which has space for all the chargers of this household, from battery chargers of the cameras to chargers of cellphones, laptops and tablets. With their labels on each cord. Maybe then the weekly searches for some charger would finally stop.
This new order and the summer coming soon feels all as a new start. Inspiring!

The National - I Need My Girl
[Poissa/Absent 194. Pigmenttimustetuloste / pigment ink print, 15x14cm.]
[Below in English]

I'm starting to reach the outer limits of my work amount: the illustration and layout jobs that I normally like, don't proceed anywhere. More new stuff just piles around. I've been waiting anxiously the end of May, thinking, that now I could finally concentrate into my own projects. I just couldn't prepare myself with this situation, when everything is just stuck or even taken a few steps back without me able to influence to it. And certainly I wasn't prepared to the sudden hot weather, which makes even the smallest job feel huge - and no need to say, that with the sun shining outside, I'm not really enjoying sitting inside staring my computer screen.
I was happy to have a couple of days off last weekend and at the start of the week: on Sunday we took train to Helsinki and came back on late Tuesday evening. We stayed in the upscale hotel Torni (which just happened to cost only a few euros more than the cheap self-service hotel chain Omena next to Torni) and the room was so spacious and cozy, that it was almost hard to leave it to go outside, even though the weather was beautiful. However, I was somewhat tired and a little bit unwell during the whole trip, and I almost flipped on Monday, when I got a few email messages marked "urgent", requiring my comment or approval on a thing or another - they all were about cases that could have been taken care of at a much earlier stage. First I thought that I wouldn't react to those messages just because I had my last day off so long ago that I really would have needed those two days without any extra mess.
But I'm glad that technique failed and made the decision for me: I just forgot my tablet charger home and when the tablet battery went out, I went offline with it. At the same time I also lost the possibility to read the electronic magazines that I had downloaded for the return trip home - the reason why my tablet was turned on. Maybe in the future I'll be wise enough to leave my tablet home and just buy good old paper mags or just crab some paper back books to my bag.
How can it be so difficult to plug myself offline even just for couple of days? And why do I feel so bad and even anxiety, when I don't answer my messages on my days off (and when everyone knows I'm having a day off)? I have been explaining my need to read email with the fact, that if I don't react to emails at once, they start to pile and then it is just pure pain to try to deal with them later when there are too much messages. But I'm starting to suspect, that I might be online addict. If I just had kept all the "door closed" on my trip, I would have had a couple of Real Holidays, instead of thinking unconsciously about the problems I didn't reply to. John Lennon has said "Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans." I say (and probably somebody else has said this before, this seems to be so obvious: "Life is what happens around you while you're online." (Well, Google didn't return any quotes on that one...) Or: "Life is what happens around you while you're checking your email."
(And I was fool to have compunction and stress about not reacting: all cases proceed perfectly fine without me.)

Kevätmielellä / Spring Spirit
[Poissa / Absent 143. Pigmenttimustetuloste / pigment ink print, 15x14cm.]
Tänään sama kaunis ilma odottaa ikkunan takana. Olen pakannut luonnoslehtiön jo laukkuuni...

In Berlin we got some pre-taste of the green scenery and warmth - and slowly the summer starts to reach these northern corners too. During the last week the trees got some leaves and yesterday it was the first real summer day. It was a perfect day to start the spring sales at the gallery Becker (of the Jyväskylä Artists' Society) in Jyväskylä. Even though I was one of the voluntary workers selling art works, there was nothing that felt "work". It was great to see how artworks found their ways to new homes, and it was especially wonderful to meet people, who had bought my artworks earlier or purchased it yesterday. Usually the gallery sales are so faceless, the purchaser of the artwork and the artist meet only seldom - and that's why when these exceptions happen, you always feel double energized for the following days.
(There were the prints of my Absent installation and also a few of the older works on sale at the event. Some artworks were sold yesterday and the rest of them will be available for half a price from the gallery "back room" until the end of May.)
Yesterday there was also "Yläkaupungin yö" event ("the night at the upper city"), which is sort of a city carneval with lots of free cultural events. But I had a difficult commission web site project waiting on my workdesk, so I missed the night parties and sat next to my computer from 5pm on. On the other hand, I peeked the event programme and noticed that there weren't a lot of offering to my mindset right now - nothing that I would have wanted to go and see no matter what. The sunny weather, though, was making my work inside almost impossible. I'm so proud of myself, that I did obey myself: at least one big problem half-solved and the project took a giant step ahead. Less work-pain for next week.
Today the similar beautiful weather is waiting outside the window. I have already packed the sketch book into my bag...
